Mystery pipe

Can someone tell me what this pipe is. It comes up from the bowels of the engine and stops, open after a U bend. It looks like a breather but there is no sign of anything coming out of it. The end looks like it has been hacked of (rather than a manufactured finish) hence my interest as to what it is and where (if anywhere) it should be going.

Could it be a diff or gearbox breather? :nenau

As this is a 3 I am not sure, but it could be an oil drain back from an oil catcher, 3 owners should be able to identify it for you, Rick

Got the truck up on four concrete blocks[1] this evening to have a good mooch underneath and found the end of the pipe. It went to the 'front final drive' as the manual chooses to call it. However, there is no mention of it in the manual (PD section). I guess it goes up out of the way for when wading through water. My question is, should it not go into something to burn of any 'vapours'? When I have the windows open I sometimes get an oil smell in the truck. I describe it as a gear oil smell (cleaner and heavier than engine oil) so am wondering if this could be the source.

Have got myself an oil syringe so am building up to an assault on the boxes and diffs.

What oil syringe have you got?, I struggled like mad doing my diff oils etc, I used a pump thingy but it was slow and hard work. I'd be interested to see what u got :thumb2

if it is the gearbox etc breather then no "fumes" should come from it, it just allows the air in each unit to vent to atmosphere as the unit gets hot and allow air to re enter as it cools and of course in its position, will not allow water to enter unless you are wading to that depth which would not be recommended, Rick

Yes, it's the front diff breather. Mine is identical, attached to nowt at the top.

Took me ages to find it, never noticed it before but I've got one on mine! It's deff the front diff breather.

Thanks Ian. :thumb2 Nice to know it isn't supposed to be going anywhere. The end of mine look didn't look square, as if a stanley knife had cut it so I was a bit suspicious. For sure, if the water gets up to there, my 'carpet off-cut' car mats are going to get ruined!

As regards oil syringe I'm afraid I went cheap and basic. A Sealey AK47 (rather unfortunate model name don't you think). They do a metal one (AK46) but the reviews on Ebay were rubbish while the plastic one was loved. So I went with that. £6.49 off good old Ebay.

I may invest in a fancier one at some point as it would be handy to be able to suck oil out of the dipstick (for those overfilling occasions) and you can't have too many tools.

I think they are talking about the method of getting the oil back into the units, I have a little electric pump that works very well, flexy hose into the oil bottle and another into the filler hole, turn on and job done, Rick

Yep, it's getting the oil back in I'm worried about. Missing the tub and getting it all over the floor is a doddle.
