Okay, I'm hoping this'll work! Some pics of my Terrano II 2.7 tdi. They're the seller pics from the ad but his drive is bigger and prettier than mine...and it's presently raining so I'm not going out to take any new ones just yet.

So, if I've followed the sticky correctly, here's Terry:

One of the seats is a bit ratty, but got some smart seat covers coming as a temporary measure...

Just one more, so as to not bore everyone. I'm happy with him. There's a bit of welding underneath to get done I think, but it's not structural and there's the damp carpet which might be linked. Other than that I think he's reasonably okay...fingers crossed! If not, seems like there's some really nice and helpful folks in these parts to help with advice.

By the way yes you should be able to change the radio without any problems as mine is the same model on both vehicles and both with the same fault.

So whats the welding that needs doing?

The welding underneath is by the driver's side wheel arch , just where it meets the sill. It looks like a plate has been put on both sides at some point, but on this side it hasn't come down as much as on the other side. Hang on, here's a pic:



I don't know if you can see what I mean from that, but I was pulling bits off- enough to knock him down on. I don't think it's spread to the sills, but I think I'll get a welder to look at it next pay day as first real priority. There's been nothing on any the MOTs as an advisory, but I'll get it sorted before it can get any worse I think.

I'm hoping you're not all going to collectively gasp, shake your heads and announce that this is something horribly common, expensive and bordering on terminal!

That doesn't look too bad from your photo, I'm sure if you look on my project thread you'll see a bit more detail in that area as I removed the wings. Make sure anyone that does welding in that area strips out inner footwell trims and carpets. There's also sound deadening pad and seam sealer on the inside that will need removing too, may make ya bill cheaper if you can do that yourself.

Looks a nice good motor does yours, windscreen looks to have some delamination but mines been like that for years so nothing to worry about there.

If you don't know much about it's history it is a good idea to give it a good service and get gearbox oils changed. The rear diff is a limited slip diff so needs proper lsd oil not gear oil, you can tell when the diff oil is tired because the backend tries to over take you at every opportunity :lol

Thanks for the tips, Jim. Regarding the carpet I've got the seats out of the way today, pulled the carpet up, had a look and paper towelled the floor dry. I'm pretty confident it was just the residue from an over zealous valet- the bottom of the plastic tool kit was wet for example, but the carpet underneath wasn't- anyway, I'll leave the seats out the way for a few days and see if it dries. Didn't really have time today to completely check beneath the carpets, but what I did see was encouraging .

In luck with the oils too...all changed about six months ago according to the receipts and garage bills amongst the paperwork, so I've got a little leeway to build up the confidence to tackle a service myself. That'll sound wimpy to most of you guys, lol. Last oil change I performed though was over twenty years ago on a Capri, but reading this forum has got me camping at the bit to drag out the toolbox and axle stands again.

Not wimpy far from it. Your engine oil will be about ready for changing then really. Does it happen to say what oil was used in the rear diff? It does make a big difference to the diff.

Stereo's In!

Got the wrong adapter to start with...but found a car spares shop not three miles from me that I didn't even know existed and they sorted me out with the right one. Really good in there, nice and friendly and knowledgeable..they're going to be seeing a lot of my money in the future I reckon :sly

Loving the stereo...it picked up my phone via NFC straight away and I even called my daughter on it. Gotta work on the microphone placement though. Technology, eh? When I think of those old 8 tracks...

The eagle eyed among you might also notice the added walnut effect steering wheel cover which has also pleased me no end! :lol

Obviously if you shop around you'll well beat that RRP. Mine was an ex-display model from car audio direct that I got for £89. I'm well chuffed with it. Downloaded a free app (songpal) that allows you to control your head unit with your phone. It's sorcery I tell thee!

Oh, and I've changed the display colour and surround to a very fetching green that matches the rest of the car. :splif:

Gotta get some new speakers now to do it justice. I've popped the back door trims off and half the fronts (the screws holding the door pull handle are so sheared you can't get a phillips to bite at all...so unless anyone's got any tips it's going to have to be an assistant carefully holding the lower door trims back and me with a stubby screwdriver and micro surgery) to reveal 6x4 ovals all round. I'm assuming I measure from screw to screw, rather than the outer edge of the speaker? Can anyone confirm this?

Hopefully popping the rear door trims off has solved a mystery too. One of the windows wasn't working and I can see that it's not plugged in...but knowing my luck someone investigated it in the past, couldn't fix it and just didn't bother connecting it again. I'll postpone the excitement/disappointment of finding out until I put the new speakers in and refit the trims.

Hi, I had the door cards off mine ( 2000 reg ) a while back, and found the same problem with the handle pulls. Turns out mine was a hex head bolt with Philips slot so managed to slot a small socket in there and undo them that way. Worked a treat as once out the Philips slots were obviously knackered.

You, Sir, are a scholar and a gentleman! I've just shone a torch up there and, yep, they are indeed hex head bolts there. I would never in a million years thought of that, so thanks again.
