Got this off gov.uk website
Exempt vehicles
Other vehicles that don’t need an MOT include:
cars and motorcycles made before 1960
goods vehicles powered by electricity
tractors
Clever lad, James Bond it
How much of it is going to be pre 1960? How long have they been making MX-5s?my son is adamant it is mot exempt ( as well as tax exempt obviously ) ....so I dunno :nenau
Problems may arise if it has not alread been registered in the UK (& has a current V5)and has been imported from Germany. Clearly it will have been built before type approval regulations came into force around 1972/3. There is a scheme called IVA individual vehicle approval if this is the case but this is a quite complicated process.
DVLA will inspect the vehicle at a VOSA inspection centre by appointment and check engine & chassis numbers against its original paperwork. If it has an engine from a Mazda they might treat it as a sort of kit car with a Q registration so it will not be tax & MoT exempt. Now that DVLA local offices have been closed you can't visit for advice but there may be a helpline.
I would be picking the brains of someone who restores Classic Cars that have been imported there are a few publications that might offer advice. You can easily make the error of restoring the vehicle and then finding out it needs to comply with a lot of more recent legislation. Either way it will probably need an engineers report to get insurance cover. It is one thing to know a vehicle is old quite another thing to prove it to the dreaded DVLA.
after speaking to tom today , he seems to think that the only thing he needs to change on the registration documents is the engine number / details , although he will send full details to dvla
