Hi

I brought my maverick at weekend tried to start it for first time today and it won't go. I have flatted battery trying. I have now noticed it has a choke "whoops" My friend is coming round later to jump start it, is there anything i should check before trying to start it again. It does go because I drove it home on sunday. Would a new set of glow plugs help or not? The light goes out quite quick so is that good or bad?

Thanks for reading

Carl

I may be getting confused here but doesn't a diesel have glow plugs, petrol a choke and never the twain shall meet :?:

Straight cough I'm no expert and may be completely wrong

I never seen a diesel before with a choke. It is called in the book cold idle start or something like that.

Strange i know

Is that only on early examples then? My '98 doesn't have it.

I've seen it before on some really old-tech diesels.

aa or rac member?

Are you sure it's not an airlock in the fuel lines?

Mine was running perfectly, and then on Saturday just would not start. It turned out to be an airlock - prime the fuel system using the pump on top of the filter body as per the handbook.

Dale

thats the same with the TDi 2.7? when you run out of diesel??

If the flexi spill pipes between the injectors is leaking it will let air in and it wont start.
.
I had this problem on my 2.7tdi. New spill pipe and problem solved.

hi carlday
the choke you describe is an enrichment /hand throttle .
very useful to warm engine up for De icing etc.
but wont make any difference to starting in the UK (not cold enough)
when you fetched your new truck had it been running before you got there.
There isn't an after market alarm or kill switch fitted is there :p
your problem sounds like glow plugs ,you say it tries to start ,do you get a smell of unburnt fuel and white/grey smoke.
when you turn the key if you are quite you can hear the glow plug circuit relay click out "if its working "
if light comes on then goes off after a short while then the circuit seems to be working.
the glow plugs DONT REACH FULL HEAT TILL AFTER THE LIGHT GOES OUT.
so count to 5 before you try to start up.
IN FACT IT WONT HURT ANYTHING TO USE THE GLOW PLUGS timing 3 times before you try to start that way if some are not working it will give the others a better chance.
see download for checking glow plugs.
DO THE ABOVE FIRST THEN YOU RULE ONE POSSIBILITY AT A TIME.

if it doesn't start then try the hand primer on top of filter "it should pump up to pressure.".

hope this gets you on your way.

I have same vehicle, the "Choke" is actually a hand throttle, you don't need it to start the vehicle.
I use mine to add a few extra revs to warm it up quicker on cold days.
It is also useful on rough roads when descending, better control than the right foot.
Problem could be either air in the fuel lines, faulty glow plugs, however they usually start with only 2 working, but runs rough for a while.
The glow plug warning light usually comes on for approx 4 seconds when cold, don't try to start it until the light goes off as it next time the light comes on the time will be shorter.
This standard vehicle doesn't have an imobiliser, however one may have been fitted as part of an after market alarm.
When it does start, note the colour of the smoke, there will be some.!!! 8O white, blue ish or black and sooty. This will help to diagnose the problem.
Hope this helps, best regards, Rustic

Hi Ian, looks like we were typing at the same time. But we are both on the same wavelength.

Hi

Thanks for help. It started this afternoon after charging battery I am hoping it will start tomorrow and it was just flat battery stopping it starting. Should I change the glow plugs or am I wasting money I have no idea how old they are, air filter is black and really caked in muck so I am thinking the car has not really been looked after. I am going to buy service kit and service it soon.

but......

I have more pressing matter with it now after taking it for a big spin this afternoon. When I am driving it pulls to left quite bad and when I brake it pulls to right I seem to be fighting against the car to keep it in straight line and it judders when I go over 50mph. Is that really serious and going to cost me loads of money or could it be something simple and cheap.

Carl

Sounds like it needs real good engine and brake service. Also get your trakcing checked. Another thing to check is the "mini filter", there is a workshop on this in the downloads section.

Most probably front nearside caliper siezed, or the 2 slide pins that allow the assembly to slide across, this is a common fault, solution, strip them down, clean regrease and re-assemble. Sometimes they are so corroded they will need replacement.
Hope this helps.

choked ???

ford "D"series trucks had a "choke" on them,it was a cable you pulled which operated a lever on to a plunger which let the fuel rack in the injection pump (simms/minimec ) go to the excess fuel position for better starting in cold weather (or to give it more power climbing hills) 8O 8O

I think it does need a real good service and check. I was going to get tracking checked on friday when I get my 3 almost bold tyres replaced. Do you think tracking will help or could it be more serous.

i get my service kit off ebay.. always sets on there

also cheak trye presures, as low one side it will pull that way

MAVERICK WONT START

HI CARL.
WELL THINGS ARE LOOKING UP IT "STARTS" :p

NEXT PROBLEM.
these trucks are known for pulling to near side.
so you not the only one to go down this road. (so help is at hand)

right
first things first tyre pressures (are they both same pressure same type/size /condition) do the tyres show signs of uneven wear "on the edges".
if so you need to start with mechanical checks on suspension components.
(ball joints, anti roll bar bushes, tracking ,or truck ride height.)
if the fault cannot be found within the above the next thing to check is the
tr union arms "i think that's what its called " its a short rod that stops the wishbone moving back .the bushes sit in a boss and this wears and allows the rod to move which in turn wears the shaft away.
SOUNDS BAD I KNOW I WENT DOWN THIS ROAD A FEW YEARS AGO, BUT IT STILL DIDNT CURE THE PROBLEM .
BUT SWAPPING THE FRONT WHEELS AROUND CURED IT. :p

THE BRAKES PULLING COULD BE STICKING CALLIPER, OR JUST MORE OF THE ABOVE.
DO A SEARCH FOR PREVIOUS POSTS ON THIS SUBJECT AS THERE ARE PLENTY.
