That's very good / brilliant mpg by any standards.

I don't think I have ever owned any vehicle that would break the 40 mpg barrier - most of my life real world vehicle fuel consumption it's been in the 25-34 mpg zone.

My vehicle ownership costs have been influenced by trying to get something with low depreciation, low capital cost so I can pay cash, lots of space, crash survivable, decent performance, reliability and manageable maintenance costs .

The annual depreciation cost of many vehicles can easily exceed the total fuel purchase in a year. My best mate bought a lovely Mercedes 350 Coupe brand new in 2010 it cost him around £55,000.

He returns a respectable 34 mpg average with low 40's mpg on a run service costs are not cheap and it eats rear tyres as he has a heavy right foot. The vehicle is now worth around £8,000 so his depreciation has been £5200 a year (That's more than our WJ cost to buy !).

My average depreciation costs are usually closer to the £5-600 mark, my total fuel costs in a year are typically around £2000 on our main vehicle the WJ our second vehicle tends to cover around 3,500 miles a year. (The old SL I do not count as she covers less than 600 miles in a year).

What I need is a big 4x4 that costs no more than £5-6k to buy, returns in real world motoring 45 mpg and is not a money pit.....and has to be an automatic. Suggestions please on a Postage Stamp!!

Add Blue Systems

Yes mate and will apparently tell me how much to put in when it needs it

On Mercs such as the 350 S class when the Add Blue Dash light comes on you have a display mileage left before it runs out.

If you ignore the warning then you are given a final reminder that gives you the distance you can drive before the vehicle is automatically immobilised !

Can't remember the distance but think it's about 50 miles then you have to call for recovery or roadside assistance via the "Lifetime Mobilo Breakdown Cover" valid forever if serviced continually from new within the dealer network.

Does your VW have such a default system ?
