Here's a couple of snaps of my Mahindra Jeep

It was built in India and is basically a copy, built under license, of an american Willy's CJ3B

It is incredibly competant offroad but a little uncomfortable on tarmac.

I upgraded the front drum brakes to Discs using Suzuki discs and Rover 216 calipers...what a difference that mod made..it now stops in a straight line... 8O

mindy jeep

not seen a good one of them round this area for about 10 years.a guy who lived down the road from me used to have a red one,but someone kept slashing the soft top when he left it parked on the road over night.it's a nice looking example :!:

I thought they were Peugeot engines in some of them, nice looking thing. Big tyres and a winch and nothing will stop you.

Thank you fellas for your comments..

Your right Boggart m8 they came fitted with a Peugeot 2.2 diesel lump built in India under license. They had loads of problems and were not imported into the UK for that long...maybe 4 years or so..

The electrics are neanderthal....and the loom runs under the Jeep to rear collecting all sorts of mud and crap...inevitably you start getting problems..some guys have re - routed the loom inside the tub to keep it dry when offroading.

The one I have is a LWB...the SWB is better looking IMHO.

John Carrol the editor of 4x4 magazine is a huge fan and has two of em...

They are really great fun to drive offroad and you dont half get some funny looks driving it along the high street...

I managed to blow the head gasket on mine so she is on a sorn at the minute...I managed to source a new engine from a fellow club member..the Mindy club that is...for £100 plus loads of extras..rad, starter, alternator etc etc..shipped up to Paisley, Scotland from Cornwall for £60...wot a bargain..heh heh...just have to fit it..

The thing is that the whole front end simply unbolts....easy to swing a new lump in with crane..actually looking forward to summer hols to get it done..

The American originals had petrol engines..the 'Hurricane' an F head..

p.s. Plank m8..Mitsubishi also built the same jeep in Japan under license from Willys...and they put in a slightly larger 2.5 diesel engine.
Here is a pic of the Mitsu version

and a nicer pic of my Indian and one of the Peugeot lump

so thats where the mitshbishi bit comes in, i'm sure i met someone once who had one with that engine, its an early shogun engine i believe

They look good, i might start looking out for one!

I have only ever seen two Mitsubishi varients of this vehicle for sale in the UK. Mitsubishi never ever exported this jeep into the UK.
The build quality of the Mitsu's compared to the Indian Mahindra from what I have gathered is far superior. But this is reflected in the price...Mitsubishi jeeps sell for around £3500...at least that was the price being asked for the two I have seen for sale.
Compare that to the £300-900 that Mahindras fetch...
They turn up fairly regularly on ebay and there is an excellent (much like this site) online club...The Mahindra Register ..it has recently had a major makeover though...explains why it dont look that busy..

well what do you know, i must have met one of the owners of one of the rare couipel around!

I fancy a peugeot one though as i like peugeot engines though to be fair the 2.1 diesel did have some issues, i did have a vehicle with a 2.1 and we swapped it fairly painlessly for a 2.5 as it is basically the same engine. But with lots of small differences, one i remember was the diameter of the flange on the water pump.

I assuem the 2.1 and 2.2 are pretty much the same?

Plank...sorry m8 must have lost my memory for a sec when I wrote that post ...the engine is of course the Peugeot 2112cc XDP diesel engine.
That makes it a 2.1 not 2.2 ...sorry if I caused confusion...
Your right about the 2.5 engines...found in Ford Granadas and LDV vans.
Some had a turbo fitted...far superior in terms of power output compared to the 2.1 produced by the Indian factory.
The 2.1 in an Indian Mahindra is mated to a Kia gearbox and a Spicer transfer unit.
The low gearing of the box results in a very noisey drive at high revs...though there are overdrive units out there that will alleviate this ...thing is they are a rare as the preverbial rocking horse poo !...and fetch a pretty penny when they do appear occasionally.

This one has been well sorted by its owner Alan..it has a 2.5 turbo lump fitted and lots of other mods as you can see from the photo...its also the SWB...much better for off roading compared to the LWB version I have.

I think Alan had to make some mods to the flywheel and the starter motor mounting plate to prevent fouling..the engine also sits at a slight angle again to prevent fouling (of something)..can't quite remember what 8O
