I'm in the shed as we speak testing these bad boys out and the seem to be doing a mighty fine job :D

I've dangled them both in and attached them to the sides of the drum with pegs

It's sizzling away nicely and all the bubbles are rising to the top :D

Mom's just a bit worried having these on for a few hours will cost as much in electricity as it would to fill up on normal Diesel as the electricity meter is spinning like a frisby :/

I need to work how much it costs roughly

do not know about cost per unit but 4kw = 4 units per hour if on constant, reason I do not know is I have not had electric bill for over ten years, Rick

Lives off grid grid i think selr sufficient might be a clue in his name?
Might be wrong

Ah living off grid, awesome!!! I was watching a program not so long back with that guy from Grand Designs on this show called Man Made Home, he was trying to achieve something similar, some of the stuff he was making was pretty cool.

I was thinking last night, obviously not in the crappy weather but in the summer, I was wondering if there was any kind of solution whereby I could put maybe some glass over the top or some kind of magnifier that will capture the sunlight and warm the oil up that way?

You know, like how you used to melt toy soldiers in the garden when you were little

Sorry to shed gloom on you efforts But they are 8" long and are at the top of a tank. convection currents will not transfer the heat downwards as hot oil rises and its already at the top. David.

Good point, I didn't realise what you were upto at first. I guess your trying to clean waste oil
Basic solar water heater might give some warmth to it , paint a big rad black and stick it on the shed roof and cover in glass. Fill with water and antifreeze and convection may circulate it a bit ? Rick is your man for this stuff.
Longer immersionelements needed too or get an old imm tank and fit elements at the lower ht.

The heat will get most of the way down, eventually due to Brownian motion if I remember my hitchhikers guide to the galaxy right! Get a big stirring stick and you'll be able to speed up the heating of the lower levels, stir that cauldron!

Watch the elements don't stay in contact to the barrel, it wouldn't be good to have that melt on you. I've seen people using 600W cartridge heaters fitted inside copper pipe as fat melters, By enclosing the element and cabling in a tube, then it can be sunk to the bottom of the pot to heat better.

In sunny weather (when ever that happens) wrap the containers in black plastic and put them under glass. Seen it done with 20L cubies in a upside down fish tank, but an old greenhouse will fit a 60L container easier.

;) Although when doing it correctly I will immerse them fully to the bottom as they are fully waterproof

That sounds quite interesting!!! I'm going to look into these theories in the summer
