Ok just made my holiday trip from Leeds to Taunton with the caravan and I averaged 20mpg is this about right, I'm towing a continental van which is 2.4m wide x7m long and 2.5m tall total weight about 1350 kg....
Thanks
Martin

I'd say it was a bit heavy on fuel. Is it manuel or auto?

When i used to tow with a caravan on the back my all time best was 31 with a trip up to whitby and some running round up there for a few days and that was with air con on.

I guess if you are a bit heavy footed itll soon drop MPG also have you defo worked it out correctly.

20mpg does sound a bit low as I think the average is around 25mpg:augie not got a caravan yet so can't give any figures myself

Auto... not so heavy footed averaged 50mph on the way down brimmed the tank and brimmed again so calculated mileage/litres used x4.54 for mpg...

Mine does 20 mpg empty - on 100% WVO thou...
14mpg with about 1ton load and.... 9 mpg with a car in the trailer, roughly 2-2.2 ton

Well your maths is right as there is 4.54L to the UK gallon:thumbs Auto do use more fuel than the manuals but I would have thought you would have got a bit more TBH, a new air & fuel filter might help if they are due for replacing, changing the oil in the auto box may also help & cleaning the mini filter in the injection pump if fitted could also help matters

I've just done a week away up to East Riding.done 385 miles to a full tank of bio.
Mines an auto but I'm running on muds and had the roof box and the back rack and boot loaded with the camping gear.

I reckon the auto is the key here, but no harm having a good service and see if this makes any difference.

I got some running around to do this weekend but mines manual and also i'll be solo. Not tested the mpg on my 05 plate but it seems to do better than my 96 plate. I really ought to get something a bit more economical but hell I love these cars.

20 mpg with a trailer that size and weight sounds good to me. I worked mine out when towing and been down as low as 18 mpg but I don't do 50mph!! I'm with TTT2 I work on 20 mpg and my van is 1750 kg towing with 2.7 tdi manual.

I would say my auto is about 5mpg less than the manual I had.
If I was that bothered about mpg I would drive a corsa:lol:lol:lol

As above but I would not drive a corsa! I'd push the terrano first haha

i have just returned from the dales to essex, round trip of 460mls and lots of hills but my 2.7td manual with 1100 van 5 gas bottles and spare fuel still gave me 28mpg.thats my wvo fuel with a little bit of rug and derv

We went up to the Outer Hebrides a couple of weeks ago with the tin tent, got 24/25 mpg towing and 29/30 solo.:thumb2 Some good long hill climbs were compulsory. :lol

Manual gearbox.

Looks like a service is due when I get back..... changed Air filter to a K&N 57i last week so will do the fuel filter even though it was ment to had a service before I bought it looks like they only did the oil.....

I average about 20 mpg if I am lucky, must be my heavy work boots:lol:lol

Just filled my 05 plate today and worked out mine. Travelling solo with about 100 miles on motorway and 300 local runs with the air con turned on I got 28mpg.
