Well, I finally did it... I moved my number plate up from the Bumper... So I can put my towing socket there instead.
This was one of those hair brained ideas after I saw how much crud my towing socket got in it while playing in the mud at Slindon. Also, for some strange reason, I am guessing because it sits higher on the T2, the caravan has taken to bending the socket mounting plate, and it only has a couple more bends, before it shears off.
I looked at how others had done it, but I just did not like the way the number plate came down over the mould line in the bottom of the door, so decided I would go for the "Jeep", rather than "green oval" look instead.
I got hold of a Vauxhall Frontera spare wheel cover, from Fleabay, as it had the perfect indentation in the middle for a number plate, got a legal larger than normal number plate made up that covered over the "Vauxhall Frontera" writing, and found some slimline LED number plate lights I could live with.
Unfortunately, the Frontera wheel cover fowled the rear wiper, so I had to make a couple of spacers out of 1" square tube, and get some 2" bolts to re-fix the original bracket a bit further away from the body.
While I was sorting out my spare wheel squeak the other day, and had all the door trim off, I took the opportunity to add a few extra wires through the door hinge wiring loom, should I want to do this, and a couple of other mods I have in mind, so it will all be wired up neatly. In order to easily disconnect the spare wheel panel when I need to change the wheel. I have a length of curly cord that runs from a socket on the wheel bracket to the lights on the cover, meaning I just have to unplug it, and the whole thing can be removed.
I then took the old number plate off, which left me wondering just how it was still on there, as only about a quarter of the sticky pad on one side was attached, and even less on the other side, resulting in it just falling off in my hand when I gave it a gentle tug... There was also about 6lbs, of Slindon mud still behind it...
I then removed the old number plate tray.. but now you can see some mounting bolts, and a rusty old towbar frame, so I will need to go and paint that, and make up some trim to hide the ugly bits... before moving the socket...
Progress is being made...:clap
The LED lights, are really bright, but the camera was insistent that it wanted to use the flash, which is why they look so dull... the best bit is, they are recessed up inside the cover, so no white light shows to anyone following me, unless they are on a luge:lol
