right think i've done it but without one of the things the mot place use i cant be 100%

yes you take the front covers off to adjust them, i've left them off for now and am hoping i can find somewhere that will do a free check for me

Mine were out prior to my last ITV (Spanish MOT) and I adjusted them using a procedure I've been using for years. Find yourself a flat and level piece of ground with a wall (I've used a multi-storey car park in the past).

Park the car facing the wall, 25 yards or so out but with the front parallel to the wall. Measure the distance from the ground to the centre of the headlights and transfer that height to the wall, making a chalk line (or a length of masking tape or similar) wider than the distance between the two headlights (I normally just go for about the overall width of the car).

Start the engine (you don't want a flat battery) and put the headlights on to main beam, then adjust them using the up and down adjuster so that the beam is central to your chalk line - this sets the height.

Adjust the side to side so that where the beam hits the chalk line is directly in front of and the same distance apart as the centre of the headlights.

When I had my last ITV I was able to see the alignment equipment and it was spot on.

As said, I've been using this system ever since MOT testing first started and never had a problem, in spite of fitting some very dodgy Chinese bulbs that put the beams all over the place.

os is all welded up now, bushes arrived today so they will go on tomorrow after i weld up the ns, i did get a bit wet :lol also got the brakes to do but dont foresee any problems

I used to feel the same. It wasnt until i had no choice i took the chance and started repairs myself. So far so good.........well apart from one welding mishap :lol

well what a day its been, got almost all of it done just need to sort the handbrake,

started off with a bit of welding on the ns rear wheel arch

inside

outside

cut out the bad bit

cut some plate and put it in place to make sure it fit

welded it in and blobbed some chassis black on it

there were some bits of sill to weld aswell but i didn't take pics of them

then i moved onto the other little bits, like the number plate bulb etc.

then the fun part of doing the bushes on the wishbone rod

this nut was a bugger to undo as no room for a socket without removing the torsion

out with the old

and in with the new

anyway i got the front brakes sorted, it was the seized slider pins, swapped them over and hey presto no more pulling to the left on heavy braking

so heres my checklist so far

you can see i've been crossing them off as i've done them :lol so tomorrow morning i'll get the handbrake sorted and take it for the re-test and hopefully pass as i need to goto derby on friday

when I did my compression rod bushes I undid the two bolts onto the wishbone first and then used a set of stilsons to turn the rod while the spanner was wedged on the big nut.
found it loads easier this way as I could get good leverage and more than 1/4 turn at a time.:thumb2

i had trouble with these and ended up getting a 24 mm silverline ratchet spanner made it easy and worth the price of spanner which was £15 of ebay:thumb2

right then i managed to get the rear hubs off to service the handbrake

cleaned everything adjusted the shoes and put back together, adjusted the handbrake in the cab to 6 clicks


but now i have no handbrake at all

any ideas folks i really need to get this retested today and time is running out fast

Probably a bit late for you now, but there is a set sequence to get a good HB, 1st check that with the HB fully off that the fulcrum levers are right back against the stops/tell tale buttons on the back plate, if not slacken the cable adjuster under the lever (10mm deep socket needed) until the levers hit the stop, then adjust the brake auto adjuster till you can just get the drum on, you will probably have a rust/wear lip which will make this job not so effective, remove as much of it as poss, I use a bench grinder to take the lip away, then re check the adjuster under the lever, you should have just a little free play before you start to pull on the two HB cables and it should only come up 4 o5 clicks, Rick

well after a very very very very long day of trying to sort the handbrake i eventually found the issue

the thread on the adjuster in the cab had flattened, i dont know how but when tightening the nut it gave the impression of tightening then obviously when you pulled the handbrake up the nut would pop over the threads. anyway a quick run to halfords and £40 later i was home with a tap and die set, re-threaded it and put on a new nut or 3 just to be safe :lol

it now holds very well on a steep hill, i rolled down the hill at 10mph and used the handbrake to stop it took 5 seconds, i did the same test on the flat and it took 2 seconds, i'm done in now and am at the point of if it passes it passes if it don't it don't, re-test at 8:30 in the morn so i'll update after
