ok, took my car in for the MOT today, bit early than its due.

Had a nice list of fails, but mostly nothing too bad. I could really do with some advice from you guys though, perhaps just to explain what parts I need exactly, an dif any jobs I can do myself?

ok, heres the fail list:

* nearside/offside headlamp aim too high
* horn not loud enough
* nearside/offside ARB linkage has excessive play in a ball joint
* nearside/offside front (lower) shock absorber has an excessivly worn rubber bush
* nearside/offside drag link end ball joint has excessive play
* nearside/offside rear brake binding
* parking break efficiency below requirements (9%)

thats it. car drives great lol, anyway, if anyone can help id really appreciate it. I skint like eveyone else, but need my car, so if I can save something, anything, thats a start!

can anyone advise what parts I need to rememdy the above issues, such as shock rubber bushes, is that the whole shock absorber? Drag Link, is that the whole steering rod?

hope you can help, cheers!

i could not find new shock bush's, but if you speak nicely to milners they will supply some that can be made to fit.
drag link is £70 odd quid from mulners, bout a 1/2 hour job, you cant repair this as joints are fixed in.
doesnt sound too bad.

hand brake maybe cable, or hopefully adjustment, make sure you clean lip off drum, or else you will have the devils job to adjust correctly.

headlamp is an easy fix. just an adjustment screw, most if not all of that can be fixed by youself with the right tools and a big enough hammer :lol

ok, heres the fail list:

* nearside/offside headlamp aim too high- mot place do that free normally
* horn not loud enough - clean connections
* nearside/offside ARB linkage has excessive play in a ball joint - milners get a pair 15 quid or so
* nearside/offside front (lower) shock absorber has an excessivly worn rubber bush - breakers. or terranosorus fronty and other jap bushes will fit
* nearside/offside drag link end ball joint has excessive play - that is likey your idler - if not its new drad link and track rod ends from milners
* nearside/offside rear brake binding - service
* parking break efficiency below requirements (9%) - service and clean

ok, heres the fail list:

* nearside/offside headlamp aim too high Best to get the garage to adjust accurately
* horn not loud enough eh? get a new horn scrapper or motorists shop
* nearside/offside ARB linkage has excessive play in a ball joint assuming you mean droplinks? easy to do - Milners £15 a side
* nearside/offside front (lower) shock absorber has an excessivly worn rubber bush think its easy enough to support the shocker and replace bush....
* nearside/offside drag link end ball joint has excessive play Pass
* nearside/offside rear brake binding check shoes, might be shot....and/or pistons are shot. bits are easy to do and not expoensive from factors
* parking break efficiency below requirements simple adjustment and doing rear shoes/pistons will help bigtime, do that first then recheck before adjusting(9%)

Doesn't sound too bad...bit of work in the frickin cold but could be a lot worse and you'll be a lot safer driving it :thumbs

cheers guys, i feel a lot better.

ill start ordering the parts now, i figured the drag link was the entire steering relay rod so thanks for cleering that up. Martin (Larson) might come down to help me with the ARB's and shocks (im not sure if i need new shocks, or just the bushes) next week, ill try and adjust the headlamp but really, the MOT man should do that easy, as for the handbreak, i have a feeling it might be the offside cable thats not working or an issue with the actual breaks-this is something i cant do myself...or is it?

the break binding has confused me. theres no noise, nothing, they work...so what could he mean?

it is ! and changing it will likelly bugger your track rod ends up too ... but it could be the idler has play , try tighteniong the nut on the bottom 1/4 turn at a time .
or get a bush off makeitfit

brakes are easy ish

they did know it has lsd on the rear so this can appear to look like brake bind , when its the dif working right ???????

beats me mate, they did it last year. im sure he knows, they do a lot of 4x4s at this place, but still, i find it odd, i know what a binding brake feels like, sounds like, and its not doing anything, so i wonder if its more an issue with the handbreak not releasing properly perhaps, i dunno! i suppose for this failure, I cant buy any parts, it needs a mechanic to look at it and put right.

extreme is smoking stuff.....how the hell is the LSD gonna kick in on the straight ahead on a rolling road?

I admit that binding rear brakes and dodgy handbrake don't quite add up, but if, like my truck, the shoes have started to disintegrate then there will be bits in there that affect the whole braking system because of the balance circuit.

Just get the feckers off :lol:lol

just take the rear hubs off and have a look ffs. its not hard work but saves loads of wonga doing it yourself

aye lol, well, the shoes were new a couple of years ago, mechanic had no problems changing them etc, but my understanding of break on these cars is minimal, so i wont attempt fixing them. If it was a caliper, no problem.

My only confusion now, is the shock bushes, I cant figure out if i need new shocks, or just the bushes. I cant find just the bushes, but im sure ive read its all one complete unit, can anyone confirm this?

also, is this the correct drag link/relay rod for my 97 Maverick? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220535284960&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT ive seen the one in milners, but its different...

if you can fix the front caliper, the rears are bloody Meccano mate. an absolute P.O.P..

You may be right......but even if you have to get new shockers, they are pretty cheap and should do wonders for your ride if they are that old....

right then, ill buy new shockers then its done. saves pissing about umming and rrring!

when you jack it up, before taking the wheel off just give it a spin and see how much they are actually binding?

ok will do. i watched them, doing that, when over the pit and both rear wheels turned easy :nenau

shock bushes are changeable and available , and new shocks are 70-80 quid ... up to you your dosh

if all I need is the rubber, then ill do that because i dont have any money at the moment. where can I get the rubbers from, and where do they fit?? Seems tome that If I went and bought the shocks, id still have to buy the rubbers?

I just realised...headlamp aim too high? I had it set on highest setting, could that be why???
