So the Terrano is due its MOT in a few weeks, the first one since I have had it, and I'm starting to get a little panicky.

The more I look at it the worst the rust seems! I know it will need the sills doing and I'm fairly sure the is a patch in the engine bay that is close to the break pump that will be a fail.

The question is should I get fixed what i can see then take it for the MOT, or MOT it first then fix what they find? I don't want to do work unnecessarily.

Any advice?

Serious rust within 300 mm of any body mounting or seat belt point will fail, problem is what is serious? if tapped with a toffee hammer and holes appear is my definition, rust around the brake servo on the bulkhead is a fail but holes in the inner wing near the bulkhead are not, Rick

Hopefully this is of some help. :D

Thanks,

yes it's 'serious' rust near the break I'm afraid. Never mind a toffee hammer, i put my thumb right through it by accident when I checking it out. (i'll add a photo later).

It sounds like it won't be classed as 'dangerous' then, so if I do get it tested first, at least I'll be able to drive it for the purpose of getting it fixed until the MOT runs out

See no pics? did you use the paper clip icon and load them in? Rick

I would argue that this is in the inner wing and not the bulkhead that the servo is fixed to, if you check out that bit of wing where the rust is, is only mastic to the main body, Rick

A lot depends on where you get it tested in Deby

Best of luck with the MoT imho main dealers set the highest bar, Halfords are always looking for work - small independent garages that test older motors I find the fairest.

I actually work for Kwik-Fit (not in a mechanical capacity) so I've been using my local Kwik-Fit centre for the last couple of years now because of the staff discount. The guys there seem pretty fair, so I'll have a chat to them beforehand and see what they say. I don't think they would turn a blind eye if something was dangerous, but they might be a more little sympathetic for staff?, I don't know I'll have to see.

Before that, I did use the local independent garage in my village who were really good, but they can't compete with staff discounts.

I see it was picked up for minor faults back in 2020 for corrosion near the lower arms? How's that repair holding out or is it spreading?

Thanks
Zac

so if i understand the description of the fault it was the rear mount on the lower arm on the passenger side!?

I have had a look and I can't even see what was repaired! It all has a surface cover of rust!

I'll add some picks, let me know if I'm even looking at the right thing?

So it's failed!

There is a laundry list of minors that I need to take care of but there are 2 majors that I need to fix asap.

1. Hole in the exhaust

2. Fuel hose rear offside leaking.

They are seeing if they can source a replacement for the exhaust but it might be a welding job if they can't get one.

But for the fuel hose, is that something I can do myself easily enough?

I made a guide on how to do that, It's in the workshop downloads. Can be found found on the quick links link on top right of the forum.

thanks,

I got the guys at kwik-fit just to put it up on the ramps to show me where it was leaking from, and it looks like the previous owner has already done this exact repair. I think it just needs the jubilee clips tightening :nenau

Rob at Japanese 4x4 Spares will be able to hook you up with an exhaust system mate, drop my name and the forum and he'll be happy to help I'm sure, here's a link to a full system for £125 which is a bargain in my opinion;

https://www.japanese4x4spares.co.uk...ystem-for-nissan-terrano-2-7td-lwb-1999-2006/

He does also sell all 3 sections singularly and also stocks Klarius gaskets and flexi repair sections :thumb2

The flexi is made my Klarius and the part number is FRP13K A60197
