Maybe its because I'm driving with the window open now that its warmer that I can hear the transmission noise but I'm sensing that the rear diff has started to whine. Its not a serious sounding noise and maybe it was always there but I wonder if adding Molyslip might help. My 3ltr '03 T2 has the rear axle with the bolt on back plate. I've only done around 5k since I changed the oil with genuine Comma LSD oil and the level is correct. Research on the web suggests that Molyslip G should not be used in LSDs but Molyslip ATS (Auto Trans Supplement) or Multiglide.
Any advice/comment/experiences?

Mine is an 02 that's done 140k with the back plated c200 axle, the diff is quiet. I find it hard to believe yours is whining, more likely a wheel bearing IMO

I think there has to be some friction or it won't be limited slip. I wouldn't put any in. David.
Might be pto bearing.

Thanks Stinka & Supernome
The Canada Molyslip site suggests ATS, I was wondering if anyone had tried it?
Re wheel bearing wear, my previous experience is that a wheel bearing noise is more of a rumble than a whine. This sounds like a gear enmeshing noise rather than a bearing rumble but I'll check them anyway.
David - where's the PTO bearing pse?

Place your hand round a bearing housing, ie wheel bearing housing and the pinion end of the diff, check for a rumble/vibration. If a bearing is gone you will feel a rumble transmitted through the housing, you shoudn't feel any rumble with a good bearing

PTO bearing is built into the universal loint, usually needle bearings. some you can grease and have a nipple some are sealed for life.... after a run is any of it hot, shouldn't be more than warm. David

Update on diff noise

Had the rear axle on stands today and ran the engine in forward gear, using a 'listening stick' (wooden rod to my ear) I found that the outer wheel bearings were not the problem, nor was it at the aft end of the gearbox/transfer box, it is definitely coming from the diff housing. It is loudest right next to the filler plug on the back plate i.e. closest to the gears - sounds expensive!! Interestingly there is no noise when the drive train is running in reverse which seems to suggest the innards of the diff and not bearings. Any suggestions? Anyone had one to pieces? Is there a download? (Briggie help!)

might be worth draining the oil and havng a look to see what bits come out with it. after all clean oil can't hurt it and if it's already stuffed I don't suppose molyslip will either.

Hi PLANK.
We are on the same wavelength, that is exactly what I was thinking. For the cost of a few litres of LSD it may prolong it's life a little and it can't hurt. Re Molyslip - I'm not sure I want to go to that additional expense as I think the final drive is an (inevitable) terminal case. I'll be looking for a replacement soon methinks!

yep, only 2 litres for that dif. you could strain the old oil a look for clues. would it be worth taking the back plate off? is there anything you can check that way?

Thanks Briggie.
Good idea PLANK. I might as well take the back plate off when I drain the axle - not sure what to look for but I can run it for a short time while the innards are exposed to try to locate the noise source. Going to try to find LSD oil and some gasket sealant here in darkest France first!
