I was going to pm Barbeast about this as i had a chat about it when we met up when i was back in Scotland, but thought id put a post up in case it interested anyone else...thank you for the drive round the off road centre, was great to see what a patrol can do in the rough stuff :thumb2

I would really like 2wd low box so i think its a case of taking the bolts out, removing hub and take spring out and put back together. Is it that simple.

Also, if this is done is it still posible to move from 2high to 4high when driving on the road (snowy conditions usually require to change about as the road changes from wet to snow)

So hubs in auto: 2h-2h-2low
Hubs in locked: 2h-4h switchable on the move -4low

Does this all sound correct?

Not quite, you can certainly disable front wheel drive by removing the cone and spring from the hub, but you can only get drive back by replacing the parts, sounds like you want to get manual hubs but you will still have to get out of the car to change between drive or no drive, and no to change from low to high or high to low you must stop no matter what situation your hubs are in, Rick

Patrols have hubs that are both auto and manual, He just wants to remove the auto part thus effectively making it a manual hub which is documented on many patrol forums :thumb2

Hubs not engaged it allows you to have 2wd low
Hubs engaged you can switch between 2wd high and 4wd high at low speeds.

Sorry Fez, so used to dealing T2's did not spot it was a Patrol, Rick

Yeah sorry its a y61 patrol.

But patrol or terrano you can change between 2h and 4h on the move with hubs engaged but yeah 4h to 4l absolutely must be stationary. By engaged i mean if i know im going to be switching between the two i will put it in 4h stationary and drive forward engaging the auto hubs then put it back to 2h and can then switch between the two at up to maybe even 40mph no problems as long as you dont reverse. I know thats all been covered many times it was really the modification of the standard patrol hubs i was looking at.
Thanks solarman216 :)

I must learn to read before I post as I know nothing about Patrols, I nearly slipped up again and nearly posted that I have centre set belts, but of course for T2's :doh, Rick

Hey Martin

Was great to meet you! :thumb2

There's a kind of washer type bit that you remove (possibly with a spring underneath it, I can't remember!) here's the post from my project thread (with pictures :thumbs) http://www.nissan4x4ownersclub.com/forum/showpost.php?p=252850&postcount=6

With the manual hubs locked you can still switch from 2wd to 4wd on the move as the hubs have no correlation to the state of the transfer box - as long as the 4wd light goes out you will be in 2wd. In fact with the hubs locked you can switch to 4wd at higher speeds than if you had auto hubs (50mph with hubs locked vs 25mph with just auto hubs).

Cheers mate, think I'll give it a go when I get the chance.

Been reading a bit about it and lots of talk about the strength of the standard hubs but with this mod done I dont see any detrimental effect to the strength and im happy with the standard hubs. No more reversing either ha ha
