Well, my T2 (1994, pre-intercooler 2.7TD) failed it's ITV (Spanish MOT) on emissions. The car has always been pretty smoky.giving a big black cloud every time I blip the throttle.
I have tried the usual remedy (injector cleaner in an almost empty tank then belting it down a dual carriageway, redlining it in each gear) loads of times, with absolutely no effect whatsoever.
A few days ago someone, Timbo I think, suggested overfuelling could cause excessive black smoke, and that could be down to "a screw" having been adjusted.
This sounds to me like the mixture screw on a petrol engine - does anyone know if there is such a screw on the injection system, and if so where it is (a photo would be absolutely fantastic!)
Thanks

one of the biggest causes of black smoke, (unburned fuel) is injectors not atomising, (breaking the fuel into a mist) if one or two are squirting like a hose pipe then you will have problems, so first thing to do before adjusting the pump (if it can be adjusted) is to take the injectors out and have them tested, and repaired if need be, bit like a petrol engine, no point in playing with the carb if the plugs are shot, Rick

mine puffs out a lot of black smoke too , can i just fit new injectors without setting them up etc ?

hi mate; red lineing a diesel is never a good idea what solarman said is your best bet [never had bad advice off him yet].

Interesting question Briggie, I'm considering buying a s/h set from cncfabs, but I also need to know whether I can just take mine out & fit the replacements.
With the car being in Spain (and my Spanish you could write on your little finger nail) the chances of finding someone to test them and set them up is remote!

That sounds good, can I pick them up from you (I've done that a couple of times before), I can then take them straight in for refurbishing. (Ignore my pm, you just answered my question!!!)

Thanks for that Solarman, I think I will follow your advice.
It's doubtful if I would be able to get anything other than complete new injectors in Spain (if I am even able to order them, speaking no Spanish), so I will probably buy a set from cncfabs, have them refurbed over here and then take them to Spain to do a straight changeover. If it doesn't cure the emissions problem then at least I'll know it's not the injectors.

A further question on changing the injectors, what sort of a job is it and what tools will I need (I have basic ones in Spain, and the socket set I believe goes up to 17mm).
You will probably gather I am a complete novice in anything diesel, never having owned or worked on one before.

Heres there website are good company will check them first to see if they need refurb would check price with them first http://www.hickleys.com/ You will need deep socket to change them i made my own cut socket in half then weld peice of pipe in between or you could always buy one

Bought a set of injectors fron cncfabs, had them refurbished (new nozzles etc) and then got them fitted by a retired English mechanic here in southern Spain. Still giving clouds of black smoke on start/gear changes etc BUT it passed it's Spanish MOT - result!!!
Thanks guys.
