Hi friends,

I was just under the bonnet of my Mistral doing a quick oil and water check and noticed something that does not look at all good!
I took some photos to so you can all see what I did.
Looking at that the engine is clearly losing oil around the turbo, am I right in thinking that the turbo seals are shot and thus she needs a new Turbo?

Really need some expert help here!

Thanks

mine was the same when i first got it but after closer inspection i found the wally who owned my t2 before me had to much oil in it so that was what was wrong with have a closer look before you buy a new turbo you might just save yourself a lot of money

Thanks for the reply.
I'm assuming the oil level should sit at the indented part somewhere between the little nobble at the bottom and the where the stick widens again?
If so it's barely over the nobble at the bottom.

Are you getting a cloud of blue smoke out of your exhaust :?: I would be inclined to clean all the oil up on the outside of the pipes & give the inside of them from the turbo to manifold a good clean & keep an eye on the oil level to see how things go over the next few weeks

Thanks for the advice.
I've taken the pipes off and given them a clean inside and out.
So lets see what happens!

Thanks again

simble it might be worth trying the breather pipe comes from the back of the head to the air filter pipe disconnect and plug the air filter pipe and put the breather pipe in to a bottle to catch any oil but make sure there is a hole in the bottle to let out the hot fumes

I would be inclined to check and clean out the engine breather system as well.

Thanks so much.
Is that the same breather pipe that comes from the back of the head to the air filter?

Are you suggesting it may be blocked?

Thanks again

Sorry I was posting at the same time as scooter and seem to have confused you.

Yes I would do as scooter has suggested, the return pipe to the sump from the breather may be blocked or the valve in the breather pot may be US. By following scooters suggestion you can rule out the breather system being the cause of the oil.

My terrano looked like that. i cleaned up everything and kept my eye on it.
Mine didn't blow smoke at all but did use a lot of oil ended up being the turbo seals.

Hope yours just needs cleaning.

£300 sorted out my turbo.

Yes, mine is also not really blowing smoke.
I also believe it is using a lot of oil.
Can I ask what repairs were done on your terrano?
Was the turbo replaced or just repaired?

Thanks

turbo was repaired, shop said the oil seals were shot.
i sent them the turbo and 3 days later it was sent back.

I was more worried about excess oil into cylinders causing damage than using oil. there was no diffence in performance now its fixed.

my turbo is also leaking, as been for a bit, asked a recon place and
they said £250 to do. Another said only do new and they wanted £550

after reading this i have pulled breather pipes off and there is some
trace of oil in there but its no where near blocked, dont know about
that round black thing i have? think its a pcv valve???

so i'm leaning more to definitley being turbo?

but then there seems to be some oil weeping from under rocker
cover??

time for that chevvy V8 me thinks!!!!
