Mistral on Ice ... 4x4 modes ?

Hi all ...

quite embarrassing last night as i get stuck on some 4 inch thick but flattish hard packed snow/ice ... and had to be towed out by a mates landie .. :eek:

Whatever it tried the wheels just slipped round over the ice and started to dig deep .. no real grip at all. What i need to know is what are all the modes i can use in 4x4 and what does the Red ATP light mean. This comes on as go through the 4x4 selection modes. Also what is diff lock and how do i select it ?

tyres are good with plenty of tread ...

any help and advice for driving on ice appreciated ... dont want to get stuck on relatively simple icy surfaces again ... lol :lol
 
tyres are your problem.

muds or AT haev to meany gaps. road or snow tyres with more rubber on the ice is what you need

sounds to me like you didn't have (or hadn't selected) 4WD? Despite what Zipps says, you should have sailed through that in 4WD.

Normal 4WD (as opposed to High) should be adequate for most situations except sheet ice which defeats most vehicles. Some people say the next stage, 4WD High, is no good for snow....I beg to differ because, although it applies more torque (normally to get you up steep slopes etc..) your revs are only about half what they would normally be due to gearing, so it can be beneficial in preventing slip.

Find yourself some snow and just play around....

Before that though, find some dryish tarmac (i.e. not running with water), select 4WD and go backwards or forwards (preferably the former) on full lock. As well as hearing the odd graunch from your steering stops, which is nothing to worry about, you'll quickly identify 'transmission windup' where it feels hard to steer and your tyres start 'skipping' - you can't miss the effect and if you don't feel it then you don't have working 4WD....

learning how to drive 4wd to the best on snow ice ect. needs practice.

Deffo selected 4wd ... as all 4 wheels were slipping round merrily ... :confused:
 
id have selected 4WD L for that situation....

as for diff lock, you dont select it, in fact, im pretty sure our cars have Limited Slip Differential on the back only....??

if you had a Uni MOg however, youd select it.....:D

Because of the way my truck works it decides on which wheel(s) it drives but if it looks like i need to show up a freelander of may be getting close to stuck, slotting it into low definitely helps. Much the same coming off muddy caravan sites with the van oin the back. Never failed yet :thumb2
 
now it will be 1 of 2 things

too much loud pedal

or not enough traction from the tyres

most likly using road biased tyres and not at's

the light comes on when the whole gearbox and transfer box is in neutral and the vehicle will move even if in park.

thanks for that ... looks like its working ok then ..

now it will be 1 of 2 things

Yes ... im using road tyres ... maybe should get some nobbly AT's !

what do you recommend ?

try out other free options, as desc above, first ! theres thousands of 4x4s out there on road bias tyres making perfectly good headway on snow much deeper than you encountered :D

or your situation could have been just "one of those things"

Most important is the depth of tread on any tyre. If youre down to a still legal 2mm youre stuffed and any tyre with more tread would probably help ;)

So many options the head spins :lol
