Guys i have a 96 mistral TD auto,i have fitted a new fuel filter and air filter adjusted the tappets and changed the engine oil twice but i am getting about 280 miles to £70 of diesel thats mixed driving not on an eco drive and not hammering it everywhere this seems crap to me i have checked for leaks and there are none that i can see.How does the consumption compare to your trucks? The beast has 30 x 9.5 x 15 cooper st tyres would this be causing the poor mpg? Also need to change the transmision oil could this have an effect?

Cheers Stuart.

are you running tyres at 32psi ?? as this is too low for the 30's

MPG

seems a bit low, is the gearbox going into top gear on a motorway run

I am getting about 325 - 350 to a full tank which at present is about 80 pound at 1.22 per litre

Since the wheels are a bigger diameter, they do less rotations per mile.
So your clocked 280 miles could be a lot higher.
Since mileage and speed is taken from the final drive.

So it's really better than you thought.
If you know the difference in diameter or circumference, the error can easily be calculated.

eg 10% bigger means you distance will be 10% more, also your speedometer will be reading 10% lower than you thought, so you may be going faster than you would normally do. Thus using more fuel.

So calibrate your speedometer, using GPS, all you need to do, is do a table:

Speedometer......GPS (actual speed)
10mph...............11.1mph
20mph...............22.3 mph
30mph.................etc

You may want to put in the revs in 5th gear then if ever the speedo breaks you know your speed, in 5th anyway...

When comparing with other vehicles, compare like with like.
It's probably not as bad as you thought.
Also fill brim to brim to check fuel.
Hope this helps,
best regards,
Rustic

Ok thanks for the info guys yes it is going into top gear i usualy put the box in hold mode when out on the road as it likes to change down a gear or two when you press the throttle even the slightest bit ,i think the tires are around 32 psi what should the 30s be at?According to the garmin the speedo is reading out by around 5 mph at 70 mph.

Its an interesting point Karl - who knows WHAT the pressure should be on bigger tyres cos theres no guidance...it just seems to me that when the standard tyres are only 26psi and a 30" really isn't that much bigger relatively, I would have thought an almost 25% increase in pressure like that is fine surely? I run my 31"s at 32 psi and no abnormal wear inside or out yet...:nenau

its dependant on the tyres normally on max with the 30 9.50 as their weight is under par comapired with the originals

take my isuzu standard it wants 28 front and 32 rear but as i have the lotus handling it wants 34 front and back

if you are running 30's or any other type of " standard tyres then it should be the max psi so i have been told

mileage

hi mate. i got a 95 mistral and i get 400-450 from a full tank. keep mine in a/t mode all the time though cos it drinks it in power mode. also fast acceleration dont help, need to build it slower to speed. just my observations.

Well im not getting near 400 miles to a tank and im not convinced that its my driving style as i have been taking it easy latley could the micro filter cause poor mpg as i have not cleaned it yet? What about blocking off egr could that help fuel consumption?

well , i am a proud mistral owner ....i use half a tank of diesel going to norfolk.... a distance from here of 218 miles , if im carefull i can make it back home too..... total round trip ... 436 miles on a tank full ..... ok a lot of it is in cruise mode , but im happy ........ if you want fuel economy dont buy a t2 .... if you dont wanna get stuck this winter .. buy a t2 .... i love my mistral :thumb2

oh and ask clivvy or jims terrano what i drive like :augie:naughty

sorry to rabbit on , but ....... one thing that will affect your mpg ( apart from the mini filter ) ... is if you regularly carry a lot of weight , particularly uphills

Yep i understand that most 4x4s will drink a bit of juice but dont think that 280 miles from 70 quid is the norm i dont mind spending money on fuel i was just trying to establish wether or not i had a problem with the auld truck,my mate gets more miles from a tank in his paj evo lol.

the first thing i would do is check and clean the mini filter .... next take a look at the other filters .... fuel / oil ... check atf level , all fairly easy and free to do :thumb2

Haha no probs bud feel free to comment lol i dont tend to have alot of weight on board i have even removed the seats in the boot god they are heavy :thumb2

i really love my mistral , and am very very very surprised at your mpg figures ..... dont panic , there are plenty of people on here to advise and help ...... its a fantastic forum :thumb2

Yep its a great car i am planning on keeping it for as long as i can i just want it running spot on as i am quite picky about my cars i hate any faults no matter how minor lol,it was my father in laws motor that he used as a 3rd car he had it for four years ish it only ever went to the dump and b and q etc so has only done an indicated 65k but he never looked after it dont think it ever had an oil change whilst he owned it!

give it a good service as a priority then , change oil /filters , clean mini filter ..... you will be surprised :naughty

Yeah i have changed the fuel filter and done the oil and oil filter twice what a mess the oil was thats why i did it twice and also adjusted the tappets what a massive difference that made sounds like a new engine compared to what it used to .Just had a thought the air filter was really bad absolutley black so i had one of the universal induction kits in the garage that fitted inside the original air box i wonder if that could be contributing to the consumption being a bit on the high side you can really hear the turbo spooling up with it on?I will go on ebay and get a standard filter and see if that makes any difference as well.

If you have a sat nav you will see how far out it is :thumbs

My GARMIN has a built in mpg gizmo :naughty

On a full tank my speedo reads 285 miles

But my Garmin puts it at 325 miles

(i'm on 33"s)

I think generally 2.7td / i - manual / auto do around 300 miles on a full tank going by what people have said on here over the time i've been on here.

Which for the power to wieght ratio is good i think plus they go on & on & take abuse & still go on & on :bow :thumbs
