Missing bodywork

I was looking for a leak around the radiator (just a pipe) and discovered the cross member rusted off on the drivers side. The area around the front chassis fixing (body) has also completely rusted away. I thought all the body work was fine but im looking forward to sorting it with my newly aquired welding skills. They are not great skills but if i get it wrong i can call on a professional.

I wouldn't be driving that on the roads, that's a body mount, and that weakness could be creating stress elsewhere that you can't see.

I'd get that welded up quicksharp!!!

The beauty with welding is if you do get it wrong you can grind it out and try again:thumb2

Yep, i grounded it the second i found it. I drove that around little Brickhill about a month ago :-0

Im getting to know my vehicle this way though, which is a good thing.

Looking forward to seeing your updates and repairs on this defect. My truck is looking a bit suspect in that spot.

Agreed, but Co2 extinguisher not the powder type, but I also keep a water pump spray bottle to hand, very effective, cheap and less damage to fabrics etc, Rick

Missing body part

Looks familiar to me... I drove home with my Terrano (+/- 800 km.) not knowing that only 4 out of 10 chassis fixing places where still finctioning, the other 6 being rotten away. Two years later almost, still working on it.

I've cut and bent some metal and welded the front. When I say welded, its rough. Very rough and I will re visit in the near future but its strong and on the road again.

Has anyone found a scrap truck and cut a section from it to graft back onto another? I'm wondering if that's a future option for the chassis mount body area. I have welded some plate to secure it but its not pretty, but once again its holding.

Now that sir, I'll take my hat off too, when I read that you'd only done a rough job I winced but you've not given yourself enough credit there, that's a top repair, I'd paint it and leave it at that mate

Hi Ceny,

I think I am going to have to have a go at a similar repair on mine.

I have a couple of questions I would be grateful if you could help with...

What thickness of metal plate did you use?

Did you do a continuos weld or lots of tacks/spots. I am worried about the repair patch, or area of repair bending?

Sorry for stupid questions as I am trying to learn to weld.

Hi Tonup,

I'm new to this as well. I think I have a grand total of 5 hour welding under my belt.

I used 1.5mm sheet. My nibbler should only cut 1.2 but it worked really well with the thickness. I tacked it on first and then welded all round where I could. I also drilled some holes in the larger flat spots and welded in them to stop any buckling. The steel is surprisingly flexible and can be folded in a vice or over a brick.

No stupid questions, we all have to learn. Also, look at it as a chance to see how your truck works. I love every minute I spend on it, regardless of how painful it is.
