Symptoms you describe are the same as I've had with three different cars over the years.
In each case , after lots of hunting and testing the fault was eventually diagnosed back to faulty starter motors.

They would start OK if battery was absolutely charged to full capacity but as soon as battery was just a little below top notch -----a lot of solenoid clicking but no starter rotation.

Replacing the starter motor was the remedy on each occassion.

Hope you find a cheaper / easier cure.

Thats the thing Chaster, just tried again -battery fully charged. still wont turn over with enough oomph to start the engine.Just two attempts are taking nearly two volts out of the battery?Spoke to a mate last nite whos a little more in the know, says as someone has posted to run a jump lead from the battery to starter, and another to earth to see if straps/clamps are at fault. visibly they look ok, but as he says, you never know. He is also leaning towards the starter motor being the culprit. But as a working chap its difficult to do much with it being dark or almost when get home. Looks like going to have to be the weekend.
Thanks for the replies Wayne

well finally got all the petrol out of mi T2, just kept running it and running it, in my driveway, with a piece of wood on the gas pedal not to many revs though n run it out! put fresh diesel in and all appears to be ok. not smoking. so im chuffed.
Now back to the battery appearing flat even after a run. tested with multimeter when running, reading over 14 volts going in. at rest battery reading 13.2v. so it would appear that the alternator is doing its job. torn now between getting someone out to test her, or taking the starter off( which i believe to be a right pig) and replacing it. A few folk on here and otherwise seem to think the starter is the problem.
Any advice off anyone whos changed one, as always will be appreciated.

Thanks Wayne

Best way to tackle the starter is working under the wheelarch take the rubber splash guard off can be easily accessed very difficult to see from the top

ok wheelarch it is then. thanks for that. so does the starter motor come out from under the wheelarch then?:nenau

thanks Richard,
unfortunately the link you sent is a dead one. Can you post it again please:thumb2

Thanks Mobyone,
had the meter on her today as per your link, from a fully charged battery the voltage when cranking her over is down to 7 or 8 volts,(basically wouldnt start a Fiesta, never mind a Terrano). However if use a big Sealey cranking box and put a load of volts into her, she will start. tested voltage reading when running and when revved meter reading across the battery terminals rises to over 14 volts, so seemingly the alternator is doing its job.
Its all pointing to the starter being the culprit. Bit of a pig to get it off, but have managed it, going to have it tested Monday.

Cheers Wayne

you need to check the cables from and to the starter too. if you follow the link to the letter, you will sort it. it is most likely the starter, but it may well be corroded terminals or a duff cable which breaks down when current is bein drawn. it will be easier with a second person too.

mis fuelled

no probs with the unleaded into diesel, its the other way about I put a pint or two in every now and then keeps the injectors clean and cheaper in the long run than 13 quid injector cleaner.:thumb2

Thanks to all who replied.
Got there:thumb2:thumb2, new starter started first time. turning over faster and better than ever has. left a couple days too, nothing draining battery either. Well chuffed:clap.
Can get on with the business of getting her through the MOT now.

Thanks Wayne
