i blasted mine with lots of carb cleaner, inside and out....

I did the same with this one but did it quite a few times to make sure but years ago when I had my SWB very few knew about TDI's having the filter & mine was really dirty & couldn't get the thing out at all so I carefully drilled it out (wouldn't recommend it unless you know what your doing) & that truck ran great without the filter being there:thumb2
