I'm hoping I'm not the only one here with a petrol NisMav...

Changing the rotor arm and dizzy cap has failed to cure a misfire on the Maverick. It's constant, at both idle and with revs. I guess there's a duff sensor somewhere but how do I check which one is to blame? Engine management light is not staying on.

Coil pack or 1of the leads:nenau

Leads look likely. Just connected a strobe up to each lead. Definitely some uneven firing. Leads don't exactly look fresh so I'll cough up for some replacements before considering the coil.

Get your head under the bonnet at night. Look for the electric light show. Keep dangly bits out of the fans and belts. David.

No you are not, I have two road going and one off road plus a scrapper not sure if I have a spare coil pack? in fact do not think so as the scrapper had the same as my wife's motor IE all in the distributor, my road going and the off road motor both have the separate coil pack, most reliable, I can jet wash the engine bay while running and not even a miss fire, leads may be but probably a bad coilpack, I do have a spare all in the distributor jobbie, but to fit it means changing the timing case, not really on, Rick

Well, I found somewhere selling coil packs for about £27 (wasn't even looking for a coil pack at the time!) so could be a lot worse. I'll get some new leads on it tomorrow and will see. It's proved very good at handling water though. An unexpectedly deep stream crossing had water washing over the bonnet. My old Landy V8 would have conked out completely!

Well, gradually replacing all ignition components! HT leads failed to cure it, so trying a coil next. Problem is, I'm out in the sticks so every time I have to order something, it takes several days for progress. Annoying.

Actually, the misfire has been much reduced by new leads. Still a very slight miss. Will see what the new coil does.

Be aware that some new dizzy caps and rotor arms have been known to fail as soon as they were fitted, are these genuine or after market items

The rotor arm was spectacularly dreadful I must admit. However, it ran no worse with the new items fitted - just also no better! Might get some genuine ones to keep in the car...

My son has a 1989 Mini and that has had a few condensers and points lately, it seems to be cheap imports so I'm told:(

Yeah. Cheap tat. Even branded stuff seems awful. My 2CV is on points-assisted ignition, which is much better. No more condenser woes!

I had a petrol Maverick a few years back and was very impressed with water resistance. Did all my early offroading in it and did a snorkel for it :thumb2
I seem to remember there was some sort of electrickery gizmo on the throttle body somewhere :nenau That was something that caused similar "missfiring" issues. Have a spy on the emanuals

That's definitely on the list of things to check, though the Downloads section only has info about the diesel.

One thing that's annoying me is the new king lead. The old one seems to actually be part of the cover that goes over the coil (this and the dizzy cover is why it keeps going in water I think!). I think I'm going to have to cut the cover to allow the new lead to go through the tiny hole. Hope that doesn't compromise the water protection too much.

Unplugged the MAF. That certainly made it run poorly! Plugged it back in, went for a drive and it now seems fine. Which is annoying as the coil arrived today and I haven't tried fitting that yet! There's a very, very occasional, very slight miss, so I might yet fit the new coil and see if that banishes it. My money is on the leads though really.

Remove the MAF and clean it (carefully) look at it with a glass before and after, dirt builds up on the inlet side on only one of the sensors for some reason, but this will not cause a misfire, hesitation, low power, but not a misfire, have you looked at the plugs? Rick
