I have been e-mailing both Lokka in Aus about diffs and suspensions and Fjallasport here in Iceland about lift kits. Replies to date are copied below just for interest really:-

Fjallasport
"We can supply you with all the parts you need to modify your T2 to 35"
tires. You need to lift it 100mm on body, and then you need the fender
flares, mudflaps and running boards.
"

I am going to phone them to go to the workshop to talk to them and see what they say about gearing, steering and clearances.

Lokka
"We have FRONT Lokka for your model, for sure.
Rear - Lokka does not fit into factory LSD hemisphere (centre).
Try front and you will see that the rear diff is less important when the front is providing traction with Lokka.

We have coils, shocks and torsion bars for your model.
I suggest you look at the 41mm foam cell size shock for this type of use/vehicle. While the 35mm nitro gas will do for a while, they wont last like the 41mm's.
Foam cell shocks much better than the 35mm nitro gas, especially on the front where the body of the shocks is so short.... not much oil capacity.. the bigger the better. The size represents the piston diameter, so the greater the number the greater the oil capacity, hence cooler, hence greater viscosity, hence less fade.
Shocks work at their hardest on corrugated dirt roads at moderate speed. Fast movement, so lots of heat build up. Slow articulating stretching over big rocks etc requires great articulation and balance - but doesn't make a shock fade.

The 'foam-cell' (or sheath) takes up the space of gas or air in other shocks. It is comprised of a multitude of minute sealed gas chambers that cannot mix with the hydraulic oil unlike the gas in nitro-gas shocks or air in original shocks.
Aeration is also due to the hydraulic oil boiling or bubbling as the shock extends rapidly after compression. The 'vacum' or pressure reduction created as the piston head moves quickly away from the hydraulic oil allows the oil to boil at a lower temperature than when under 'normal' pressure.

The compressed gas chambers in the foam-cell rapidly expand as the shock extends after compression, forcing the oil back through the valve stack, hence maintaining a more normal pressure on the oil. The likely-hood of 'low' pressure – low temperature boiling is reduced.

Original shocks and the 35mm gas shock both aerate in extended severe conditions due to oil-gas mixing and low pressure boiling of the hydraulic oil.

We have a kit of the Medium+ coils, 4x 41mm foam cell dampers.
Cost $662 plus $270 for Torsion Bars.
3 year warranty unlimited kms.
This will achieve a 2" lift from standard and have a much better ride and handing compared to standard.

For comparison, $522 (plus $270 for Torsion bars) for 35mm Nitro gas kit (2 year warranty - unlimited kms).

Prices $AUD

I will need to get a quote for suspension freight, if you wish.
"

The diff was quoted at $610 AUS to my door.

Hmmmm interesting stuff.

it's not just a case of lift, the front steering is crap.

Chat with makeitfit or 4x4extreme, they have used and use big tyres before.

Also it's pointless buying new torsion bars, your existing one WILL BE FINE.
The shocker advise is sound but bloody expensive.
+2" rear shocks I've got in stock at £40 each oil damped hydro somethings (I'll check) perfect for the job and allow an extra 2inch travel. The front shocks will be std length as you wont get the IFS to move ANY further , simples.
The body lift is the main thing you need to get clearance for 35s, but a 100mm lift kit should only be about £100. fender flares is the Icelandic speciality, cant wait to see them :D
STEERING will die. Also the gearing will need sorting , again I look forward to the Icelandic solution.
Checkout my steering mod thread, you'll need it :thumbs
Front lokka top plan, I like :naughty
Here's the steering mods you'll need http://www.nissan4x4ownersclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8456&highlight=strong+steering
here's the shocks I've got http://www.nissan4x4ownersclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14075&highlight=rough

I have £ for a lokka now, but I want a motorbike :D

Thanks for that Pete, Mind if I grab some photos of the steering mods to ask for comments from the mod shop ? Met the guy today - seems straight enough - the front yard was full of things on 38's and a Troll on 42's (I think). He made it sound very simple - said the gearing could cope and steering was just longer trackrods - hmmmmm . They do 100mm ally blocks for the lift. He said the front bumper work needs cutting and they cut a section out of the the of the front inner arch to clear the wheels " Not much - simple job". You have to be careful over here though because they tend to be a bit "casual" about things. Odd thing was they have to get the new track rods NDT'd and certified to approve the mod. Sounds like $$$
Anyway he is running me up a quote - we'll see in a few days.

The Lokka is seeming very interesting ........

Refeernce this bit "The front shocks will be std length as you wont get the IFS to move ANY further , simples." - can you elaborate on that a bit ? Are you saying you can't lift the front suspension at all ?? What are the limitations ?

Thanks as always

Bryce

The alu blocks are fine and they will lift the body.
The suspension can also be lifted but only by 2". Any more and the front independant suspension will be bottomed out and at the extreme limit of its movement. The cvs will be shot pdq followed by the ball joints etc.
Use the pics as you like mate, no worries.
Bigger suspension lifts are possible but will need the subframe dropping and the diff etc etc  sod that. You might aswell just put a live axle up front instead:sly

Ahh ok - I thought it could go up 2" but I was confooozed for a bit there thinking you couldn't go anywhere. We shall see what he comes up with on prices - I think he mentioned 120,000 ISK for the body kit which = £620  but with the crisis maybe he will re-think it. Also no price is fixed here at the moment.

I hope that's including labour and all mods done for you. While you're put up in a nice hotel enjoying a meal for two followed by a live show.
materials for the lift kit here are £63 for a 60mm one. So maybe £100 for a 100mm lift, it's just some spacers and 8 bigger bolts:eek:

Sorry - wasn't clear - thats the arches etc. I wait for the quote with interest

Full job then seems good. I look forward to the quote . Ask him if he makes the arches for the job or has something available.
I'd love some myself.:thumbs
