My stupid computer has decided to up load window 8.1 in spite of me denying it, so not only has it cost me more than my whole months allowance it does not give easy access to control panel in order to delete all the stupid apps that it has installed that I do not want, so how do I get into control panel please, Rick

Oh blimey, that's not good..

If I were you I'd be ringing up the provider first and sorting out this capped limit, unlimited broadband is very cheap now, I'm sure a tenner is enough for a month of reasonable speed

I will gladly haggle next visit if you like :thumb2

Control panel - in main screen point mouse to bottom left of screen

An icon will appear, click on icon and list will appear, one of which is control panel :thumb2

Or an arrow near bottom left of screen, then it will open a big list of apps ect, control panel option is near too right of the list :thumb2

Try this

Go into main apps page as I refer to it, the one with all the square blocks. Once in there don't click just start typing control and before you've finished typing it control panel will be listed on the right hand side, simply click on it and you're away.

Use the same method to look for any other part of windows or programs.

Press the windows key next to the space bar to toggle between desk top and apps page.

ive had windows 8.1 for quite a while now ....... clivvy did summat so I have my start button etc back ...... no idea what he did tho

Windows 7 professional

When I purchased my new laptop last year I insisted I did not want Win 8 of any kind. All my PC's run on Win 7.

My brother has Win 8.0 with a start button and he hates it !!

Windows 8 & 8.1 work but they are not everyones cup of tea. I use it daily on my work laptop so I've got used to but still prefer 7. Wait until Windows 10 comes out later this year, I like the look of it so far on the pre release copies.

Back on subject, Rick use the windows button to toggle between the main desktop and the apps page. Once in apps page simply start typing without clicking and you'll see control panel appear or what ever else you are looking for. Remember those tips and 8 becomes a little easier to use.

Tip for Windows 8.1: Right-click on the Start button - this will bring up a menu with fast access to control panel, command prompt, etc. without having to go through the start screen.

I've just been given a new phone for work, it's one of these new things with a big flat screen and no buttons.
I have to slide my finger on the screen and it's about the size of a house brick Grrrrrrr
I miss my little Nokia with it's buttons :(

OK guys and girls, my mobile broadband contract is very near its end currently with Orange £15 a month for 3gb we have no land so not an option, seems I can get 15gb a month for £20 much more than enough for me, thing is I often pay that anyway as I go over the 3gb often by a little 0.3gb Max but for that they charge me a fiver, currently on 3g but 4g available on both Orange and o2, my phone is o2 (what I am using now via a tablet) but only 1gb data unlimited calls, so which way should I go? 15gb with Orange or upgrade my phone contract to get more data and hook it in somehow to my laptop, it is the hooking in to the lappy that is confusing me at the moment, if I can get a realy good deal then it could be worth it, but I am a simple creature and like a phone to be a phone and the lappy for all else, suggestions please, Rick

Be worth a shop about, that's more than a lot of providers charge for unlimited I'm sure.

Come one guys, who's got good providers?

Virgin product is great, but boy when it goes wrong.... :doh

Who's the welsh lad in the advert with the choir in the background?

You can turn most phones into a wireless hotspot, it's called tethering but you'll have to learn how to set it up on the phone and turn that function on and off as you need it. Have you tried asking your provider to see if there is such a thing as a 4g dongle? I've no idea if there is or not.
If you stick with your 3g dongle its a no brainer what to do.

Don't suppose you have virgin cable in your area do you? You could see if they would provide cable broadband only connectivity perhaps.

That is exactly what I am doing now Jim on my tablet but but how does it work to the lappy and can I get a good deal with o2 on a phone? Have looked but cannot make sence , Rick

Most laptops these days come with wireless so you simply connect to the temporary wifi hotspot that your phone will transmit. Your phone will give the wifi hotspot a key code. If you do decide to go the phone route or want to test with your existing phone drop me a pm and I'll give you my number and I'll try and talk you through it.

No idea what each provider offers Im afraid.

So are you saying WiFi offers 4g speed? Rick

If your phone is on a 4g signal then the wireless tethering has got to be faster than. 3g signal. Your laptop connects to your phone, your phone connects to the 4g. Don't ask me the technicalities of the speeds tho.

OK question for you, does your current mobile phone connect to 4g signal?

Also how do you connect your tablet to the internet?

I have heard that Microsoft is going to allow free udates/upgrades to Windows 10. Even those of you with "doubious" versions. David.
