Autoroute will show you where you are on a reasonable map, but it won't navigate for you. Takes GPS data in via a serial port, so pretty much any GPS receiver with NMEA output will work.
There may well be better software than Autoroute though.

Yes the luvgluv knows ya know:augie
I've got some software on my computer he loaded on for me but I dont realy know what to do with it
Help us oh learned one:bow

What are you like Pierre???

Best two OS packages are Memory Map and Fugawi.

Both have similar functionality, allowing you to follow your track, save and open routes, graph your journey as a function of height versus distance yadda yadda yadda....more than you'll ever need.

They are effectively satnav for offroading, with the same degree of accuracy (+/- 10-20 feet) but mapping you on a standard 50,000:1 OS map - or for some areas like national parks 25,000:1.

You just need to install the software and maps to your laptop (Fugawi takes about 4Gb and MM about 10-11Gb from memory). Then get yourself a cheap bluetooth USB dongle and a bluetooth GPS unit - about £25-30 total for the two.

Let the dongle 'find' the GPS unit, select the right unit in your software and bingo, instant "you are here"....

Only real downside is price. OS maps cost a fortune to licence so they are not cheap to buy....but you can just buy the regions you want (only four of them in Fugawi for the entire UK at about £50 a pop, while the 25000:1 versions, for say Lake District are about £70 each. The actual software is cheap and I've even seen it free....but of course its useless without the maps, which is where they make their money.

If you can make do with 2004 OS maps or just want to try it out, PM me as ther are things that can be done ;)

..and don't forget to connect the widget feedback isolator....

Ah, funny you mention that!:)
I've been fiddling with my phone's widgets and keep loosing where the bloody dialler bit is:lol

But then you played quite happily with that laptop your missus bought you for Xmas three years ago, until last week when you discovered it was actually an Etch-a-Sketch....:augie

I've got (or had) fugawi and memory map. tbh 6 and 2 3's depending on personal taste.

I prefer memory map, any specific questions about it please fire away. We use it on the lap top and on a a pda as a hand held sat nav. Works very well :thumb2

when you say 'we', please don't tell me you get it at work for free or I'll hate you even more!!!!!:doh:lol

Got a compass on my phone:thumbs
Only trouble is to set it one needs to do a "Gareth Hunt" (coffee bean) to orientate it:eek:
Best ignore that particular function then :lol

i use memory map on the pc and up load it onto a pda for use in the motor.
bought an acer pda thing with gps reciever and auto route already intalled on it for about 50 quid of of flea bay.
not had any probs with it apart from the size of the screen on the pda.

depends which acer of course, some of the ipaqa range from squint to see up to larger as or larger than a tom tom type :thumb2

My missus's new phone has 4 point something inch touch screen and works on windows mobile. We're going to put mem maps and igo sat nav onto it, once I've told her :D

nahh....tact and diplomacy ,i love her to bits but she can be quite frightening :D:D:D:D

I'm in the good books at the mo just spent the night tiling the kitchen:clap

I refuse to be crushed LOL.

What phone is it by the way Dave, I'm being tempted to upgrade but want something with a proper screen....work gave me an HP iPaq and its even titchier than the old one I had....can't see a bloody thing on it!:doh

I'm using an ipaq hx4700 pda for car sat nave (igo running ) and handhheld/walking & off road (mem map running). Its a decent size screen for a pda and the casing/frame is metl so after nearly 4 years of abuse its still working, thats a record for me :D

Her phone is an HTC HD2 . Its the second generation hd ie the 2 quite new out and some links and less scrupulous sellers will point you to the 1st hd which is good but nowehere near as good as the new one.

Its this one http://www.vodafonebusinessshop.co.uk/Details-Phone-HTC-HD2-3120.html?WT.Srch=1 highly recomended and to date no significant problems other than none of the kids have been available to set it up for us :D:D:D

I reckon its easily as good as the i phone, shed loads cheaper and crucially as its windows based with gprs you should be able to run mem maps.
