I did a bit of a search, and the law on bull bars is a grey area.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullbar

This is from wikipedia, so bear that in mind...:augie

Pretty sure sale of metal bullbars was banned about 2007 i hate the things and cant see why anyone would want to fit them they look ugly and are deathtrap to pedestians. Im sure if you had them fitted and caused someone serios injury the insurance wouldnt pay out declared or not.

The thing is if a 2-3 tonne 4x4 hits you bullbar or not your pretty stuffed anyway:augie

I would disagree cars are designed to be pedestrian friendly hence soft plastic bumpers if a child was hit in the head by a plastic bumper chances are they would survive on the otherhand if hit by scafold pole at 30 mph chances are they wouldnt. But thats just my opinon i have 2 children the bullbar fitted to my 4x4 was removed when i bought it and was taken to the scrap yard where it belongs

Maybe on the newer 4x4's but TBH the T2 is very old hat as Nissan never changed the bumper set up to be pedestrian friendly in the 24 years it was in production yes the styling of the front bumper changed 4 times but ever one had the same steel work set up behind the plastic:augie my mate has a newish vw touran & some women walked straight off the path 3ft in front of him with out looking at all & he was only doing 15-20mph yes the so called crumple zones for pedestrians did nothing infact the isn't a mark on the front bumper but the bonnet is dented badly & the windscreen has gone as she smashed it with her head:doh it's still 50/50 if she lives or not yet my mate is getting a hard time off the cops & is on bail because of the accident even tho there is around 20 witnesses who have all stated she just walked out into the road without looking:doh

There neither legal or illegal as they are a grey area until you are involved in an accident where its considered that if it wasn't fitted the outcome would not have been as bad.!

FACT.!

This is what happened when I hit a Disco with a winch bumper ( no winch & neither his or my fault as somebody pulled out of me & I swerved to avoid as the disco pulled out of his drive... )

As i speak from experience

Had my seat belt on as well :bow

& it was a few months after the accident I got "Dirty Frog"

WITH A BULL BAR ON FROM NISSAN.!

& all 3 of my 4x4's have had metal winch bumpers & current 1 has the plastic outer covering it. :augie

Thankfully they caught & prosecuted the ars that pulled out on me but the disco driver had to go to court over the bumper, I don't know & wasn't told if it was to do with insurance notification of the mod or the impact damage on my chav cav  :lol
The disco I might add, only received paint damage & he was traveling at under 20 mph & I was doing 40 mph.
The coper came to see me a few days later & said no metal bumper & there would of been nowhere near as much damage.

So I can see all points from both sides on metal bumpers front or rear & bull bars / A bars.
MOT law only looks for sharp edges & fitted from manufacture.
Winch or no winch fitted imo is nothing to worry about, whos to say its not in for repair or you're upgrading it. :augie

I personally think the front & rear bumpers look shit but we do what we want to do to make us happy :thumbs

We'll have a chat this Saturday Alex & I can pass on what I have learnt on here / other forums & top chaps like Pete aka "makeitfit".! :bow :clap :thumbs

That'd be good adz, I'm always up for learning :thumb2

It seems to be a tender area the old "bull bars"

Glad you came out of that one ok. I think again its like a dangerous dog, they are gentle unless put into he hands of a dangerous person :thumb2

The area i live in is quite forgiving too as I am just off a busy road (no kids and hugely open)

...The area i live in is quite forgiving too as I am just off a busy road (no kids and hugely open)

Does that mean you are not going on public roads, or passing children on the pavement.:nenau:nenau
They also tend to walk out, in between parked cars on normal roads...

Accidents happen...
BUT in most accidents there is a cause, and blame...

In all traffic accidents involving more than one vehicle, there are always innocent people that are involved, and in the majority of times, there is nothing that these people can do about it.
It can also happen so quickly.

Nobody expects to have an accident.. although some drivers are accidents waiting to happen...
But you can take precautions, wear a seat belt, make sure there are no loose items on board, maintain your vehicle to be 100% Be alert, never drive when tired or under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Never use a phone whilst driving. Don't have distractions in the car, messing with the radio, sound system, sat nav, or a Mother-in-Law talking AT you...:doh cor blimey...:doh

Most importantly, don't modify your vehicle so it puts you, your family or other road users at anymore risk.
The problem with modern cars, is they all have bumpers at different heights, and the problem with SUV's and 4x4's they are taller and tend to ride over the vehicle in front.
In the same way, if a car runs into the back of a 4x4, it tends to go underneath it, lifting the back...

I drive defensively, one of my defences is, when I stop... to have an escape route.

This I believe saved my sons life about 10 years ago.
A queue of cars were approaching a roundabout, 1/4 mile to go... a van in front braked hard, the cars in front stopped easily, I was braking and I could see in my mirror that the car behind was oblivious to the situation, with a very high risk that he was going to run into the back of our Fiesta that I was driving with my son in the back at a speed in excess of 30 mph...

I just moved over to the left and mounted the grass verge out of the way...
The car behind CRASHED into the car in front of us, followed by another car behind him which CRASHED into him...

We were the smallest car, we would have been the crumple zone for all cars involved, I doubt any of us would have walked away from this.
We gave the first driver an extra 13 feet extra stopping distance, plus the space in front of us, thus reducing his impact speed and reducing his injuries.

Recently, on a local motorway, a 23 year old lady was killed by a lorry, whose driver was on the phone, he crashed into a line of traffic, her car was crushed, killing her outright. The driver of the lorry went to prison...

There is little you can do about this, OR IS THERE ? in a similar situation, I stopped a good distance from the car in front, in a queue, as there was nothing behind me...
Brake lights on, still in gear, looking in the mirror... I see a car skidding to an uncontrolled stop, I could see he would just about hit me, so I crawled forward a few feet giving him a longer distance to stop...

I still remember the look on his face after I did this... he was so grateful.

On the motorway in such situations I try to keep an escape route especially if I am at the rear of slow to stationary traffic.

More of an Uncle to Alex...
I couldn't be Alex's father.. :nenau... no! I was out of the country at the time :augie..:lol

I have been around for a while, not quite as long as Briggie or Rick, I still can't catch them up, I have learnt a lot, I like passing on my life experiences, more especially if it saves people money or personal injury.:thumb2

Safety first in all cases.
I do tend to pick up on safety issues quite a lot, and sometimes this can be a bit boring, but if it only helps one person, or just makes someone think before starting a job, then it is worth the time spend writing this cr*p...:augie

Hear hear, I hear you all say..:lol

Anyway, I will still continue with it... :doh:doh

We need all sorts of people on the forum, if we were all the same, then we would all know the same stuff, and there would be no point in this or any other forum...

Top notch dude, I do also love your posts, it's always nice to see the other side (as clearly I am the other way inclined)

Most of the drivers in my area are ruthless arseholes, typical london arseholes, all slow speed traffic, the people who just wanna take the piss.

Since owning the terrano its funny how people treat you differently when they know their vehicle will come off worse. This is how i see the road and how I have been used to riding and driving. Unfortunately you have to or you get bullied...

I await the criticism :sly

I agree & Rustic knows me from my last spell on here :augie
I say what I think & won't back down if I know / or am in the right :naughty

Bottom line is, those bumpers gotta go
There for a play n play site, not main roads & thats coming from somebody who has had a lifetimes abuse thrown at him about the state of Dirty Frog  :augie

I heard there was a new MOT rule brought in that if you have steel bumpers you HAVE to have a winch or they are illegal :nenau

Mine will have steel bumpers & a winch but it'll be up to VOSA or a specialist catagory MOT that'll determine weither mine is ever road worthy again :thumb2
