Maybe a Serious Problem?

1999 Terrano 2 TDI 160.000 km, in my possession since 120.000 km. Never any issues.

So.... My speedo cable on the transfer box started leaking so i changed it. When i drained the Transfer box i could see there was not too much oil left. 1 liter or so. There was quite some metal/oil mix on the magnet. I refilled the T-box with original Nissan oil. At the same time i changed oil on the rear diff. Original Nissan diff oil, "not to use when genuine LSD oil is required". Not much metal on that magnet.

Well i drove 25 km and i had to reverse a bit. I could feel a very strange faint shudder/vibration/jumping from the rear wheel/wheels. I think the left one. Drove back home and the same happened. This time i rolled down the window and drove forward and back a few times. This time i could hear a not so good sound. Sounds almost like a damaged bearing. Changing brake shoe i could not see or fell anything should be wrong with the bearing. Anyway one brake shoe lining was cracked. It apparently only happens when turning and reversing. This only happened after changing the oils. The day after there was nothing but i have only been driving in the drive way. Just testing.

Sounds like non lsd oil in the rear diff.

Can you link us what oil you have used? And where did you source it from? :nena


Not that the crack is not important but this is exact symptoms of non lsd oil.

Sounds like you have used normal transmission oil, You need LSD specific oil

Will try and find a link in English. It NISSAN 80/90 differential oil(gery bottles) but as i wrote it's written on it "Not for use when Genuine LSD oil is required".

The guy where i order part(Exist.ru) looked into the date base for oils and came up with this. I have been driving only 55 km and not faster than 80km/h max. How bad is it?

slow speed with very slight lock or miss matched tyres and the wrong oil will produce what I call "driving on rumble strips" this is the limited slip clutch ratcheting round instead of slipping smooth, would not worry too much about the transfer box, Rick

The LSD oil is essential. Nissan dealers near to me in the UK don't normally stock it, not sure about Denmark.

There was nothing while driving forward, only in reverse but i felt it right away. Funnily i just had to put on the spare tire which is a quite different pattern than the left tire. Is this bad Rick?

Most importantly is to get that oil changed. It even says on the bottle "not for use when genuine lsd oil is required" the guy should have figured this out :doh



Did you get this from a main dealer? IMPORTANT! :nenau

If you did, you might be able to get hold of the guy and get the right oil free of charge. I'd mention they have sold wrong oil and mention damage too :sly

Because you have a limited slip diff on the rear it is important to have equal rolling radius tyres on the rear as this lessens the work=wear that the rear diff has to do, unequal tyres means the diff clutches are working all the time even when straight ahead so this shortens the life of the oil and the clutches, Rick

That is correct, you should have both rear tyres the same wear, Rick

Just remember, NEVER put GL5 oil in the gearbox, MUST be GL4.:thumbs

The Mobilube 1 SHC say it meets GL4 and GL5 standards.... Confused
