I have just sold my old wheels, 7x15 fitted with 31/10.50/15's,
to someone with a terrano. they were fitted to my patrol. will
these fit on it? i wasn't convinced but the buyer didnt seem worried
so sold them! just asking to satisfy my own curiosity!!

People seem to run them without any problems, yet my 30/9.50/15s rubbed till I took the mud flaps off and dressed a seam back a touch. I think a lot depends on how big the tyre really are. I've heard of so called 31's measuring at under 30", my 30's are yokohama's and do measure at a tad over 30" fitted.

I don't know if this is any good as an example Hummingbird but i've copied it out of a mag here go's
Hankook RT03 M/T 235/75R15 =29.1"od 32.11.50x15=32.8"od 33.12.50x15=32.8"od :?

i'm a bit new to this tyre size thing :| what is the equivelent to 31/10.5/15 e.g. 235/75/r15 :?:

in the examples you give

31/10.5/15

235/75/15

15 is wheel size in both, that bits easy.

10.5 is width in inches which is 266.7 - so nears as 265

235 is width in mm - so 9.25 inches.

31 is diameter in inches

75 is profile expressed as a percentage of the section (width)

so a 235/70/15 works out as follows

wall height 235 x 70/100 = 176.25mm

Wheel diameter = 15" = 381mm

Tyre diameter = wheel dia + 2 x (wall height)

= 381 + (2 x 176.25)

= 733.5mm

= 28.87 inches

235/70/15 is same as a 29/9.25/15 if such a thing exists.

31" = 787.4mm diameter

787.4 - 381 = 406.4 (total wall height)

406.4 / 2 = 203.2 (single wall height)

203.2 / 266.7 x 100 = 76%

so a 31/10.5/15 is roughly the same as a 265/75/15

Hope that helps you understand how the measurement systems work. For 4x4 stuff the imperial system works well cos it lets you compare wheels by diameter immediately, a 31 is bigger than a 30 regardless of width and that is often the figure people are most interested in, bigger tyres give more lift thus more clearance under the diff (and everywhere else)

thanks for the replies guys, was just interested
put one up against the car and it looked like they
might but it was gonna be close! but they wanted
them so hey! got the money to get a CB now

sorry to push in on your post bigbadwolf, but have another question for hummingbird - will a 265/75/r15 (31/10.5/15) fit on my mav that has 235/75/r15s on it??

I would say so T-jay  If you put your mav on full lock have a look to see if you've got clearance for an extra 30mm

A lot depends on the real size of the tire not just the markings on the side wall. If its a true 31" tall tyre I think you'll find it will rub, the extra diameter is as much or more of a problem as the extra 30mm in width. My advice would be if you want a certain size, get the same brand as someone else who is alreay running that size, or if you want a certain tyre make/type find out what size other people are using it in. As for what sweety said, remember the wheel moves up and down a lot especially when laning or off road so a quick static look isn't enough. If I'd have bought 31" versions of my tyres they would not fit as theres barely enough room for the 30s, other people have got 31s on of different brands with no problem. I think the cheaper brands and remoulds tend to be more optimistic with their sizing than the new branded tyre manufacturers. Mine for instance are Yokohama's, no point looking for any they stopped making them some time back, a good match is a Mach, but I'm not sure what their sizing is like.

i guess i'm probably best sticking to the same size that's on there to be safe. thanks for the help hummingbird
