Hi all,
Just bought a 1995 2.7 maverick 130k, all seems good but have noticed a whineing noise coming from the gearbox area when accelerating through the gears, its only when accelerating hardish.
Is this the gearbox on its way out or is it innocent.

have you checked the oil level ?

No havent checked it where do you check the gearbox oil level.
Bit baffled as it all sounds smooth when cruising along if it was the gear box would it be noisy all the time?

Might be the bearing :nenau

Does it sound like a washing machine

the level plug on my 96 mav is on the right hand side of the box , us a 1/2 " drive rachet to remove , it will be tight if it has not been removed for a while.
the noise from the gearbox will be louder on acceleration as the gears and shaft are under load . if the level is ok it may be worth changing the oil as it may help.

Thx for the manual link, as regards the washing machine noise it does sound a bit like that, guessing i may have bought a duffa, only paid 700 quid with 12 months mot but looks like it may be going back on ebay.

dont dismiss it yet , check fluid levels

Will do and will report back, is there anyone in the cumbria area on here that wouldnt mind having a look?

Getting me thinking cap on

Don't let that put you off M8 :thumbs

It can only be fluid or bearing if its changing gears ok :thumbs

Is the 4WD / transfer box working ok & noiseless

4WD works like a dream in low and hi but still get the noise through the gears.
Gear changing is also fine bit clunky but nothing out of the usual

As above, change the fluid, its quick n easy, if it doesnt stop it, then it could be the bearing, not done a gearbox or clutch on mine yet so cant say much more buddy :nenau

Does it also make this noise when using the gears to slow down?

You could try Molyslip, this can reduce the noise by 90%.
There are several threads on this.

Best regards,
Rustic
