On the facelift maverick and terrano models, Has anyone upgraded the lamps to projector types?

I have an E30 3 series which uses projector lamps, These work perfectly with HID conversions and I have had my HID kit fitted for a number of years with no issues.

I am going to look at fitting the e30 dip beam lamp (The right hand lamp on the the image below) in place of the current dim/main lamp. The e30 lamp has a port for sidelight too.

I'll then rewire the fog to act as main beam.

I think it will require a spacer plate to adjust the hole spacings to suit, but once this is done I can trace it into a DXF file to get a batch machined if others are interested.

Does this sound possible or am I wasting my time

oooo yes please :D
Nice to see someone else "modifying" good man :naughty

Us ESSEX Boyz do modify ya know :augie
Ya coming to the meet in a few weeks ( not in ya bimmer :lol )

im dooing a little moddin too!!

heat exchanger.. got one to "try" to fit..

It's early days on this mod yet, but if it works I'll happily supply the club with the DXF file so they can get the plates made and sell to fund the server fees.

The E30 headlight use 3 mounts, one fixed and two to adjust. These are a pig as the socket end is nylon and very brittle so I'll be swapping to studding and dome nuts so it's a bit more servicable.

They are also very easy to adjust to LHD configuration, just three screws and the bowl rotates to convert them so it's a handy coversion for those travelling abroad regularly.

I shall be going to my local friendly E30 breakers saturday night so will see if I can grab a headlight to start playing with. If anyone has a mav/t2 headlamp housing and guts (smashed lamps would be fine) they could donate/supply cheaply then I can get to work quicker. I'd rather not keep taking bits off the maverick to mock up. ;)

And boys and girls, what a difference they make!
i got the h4 hi/lo kit and apart from my headlights now need adjusting they really brighten up the road.
i can recommend these plug and play units to really brighten up the road

HID

Just a point to note, if your head lights aren't used as designed ie bs approved then it could with a sharp eyed mot tester fail the mot. So if they are H4 and you change to HID technically it would be illegal. I work in a garage as a panel beater and the mot tester there jumped on me for just thinking about it.

Another point to note, how many times have you been dazzled by these dam things:nenau

T2 Headlamps are poo, putting these HID kits in them only dazzles people. Personally I think these should be banned as retro kits, they are bad enough when manufacturers fit them as standard but at least there is some design gone into those.

Sorry but no.

If the lamps are properly aimed with good reflectors and lenses (i.e. MOT passable) and the bulb properly moounted in its holder, then no matter what bulb, it can't dazzle.

The problem is, and especially with hi-lo's the HID bulb fitment in its holder is less than optimal in some cases, and the focus point is out, so the beam pattern is not as designed. This is especially true where the hi-lo has a shutter, which isnt in quite the right place.
