I have just bought a Maverick Mk 3. Just wondered if any one else has one of these and what it is like off the road. as it has automatic 4 wheel drive with a switch for permanent four wheel drive. No Hi Lo range. I got it mainly to tow a trailer tent or small caravan.:doh

Have the Terrano II Mark 3 LWB. Mine has the hi and low stick though and not a switch for shifting. I have the LWB model though and find its great for towing. My thoughts on off-road ability is that it is good but does need decent tyres if you go into too much soft ground especially on the LWB.

Maverick MkIII? Are you talking about the rebadged Mazda Tribute? Piccies?

If it is, then its a soft-roader really and more akin to, say, the Freelander or X-Trail...

so do these have electronic 4wd like the freelander and xtrail. because if you just bought it for towing . i cant see any problems . dads caravan mags all say that the best set up for towing.... stability wise.

Yes this is the Mazda Tribute /Ford partnership. There were only 75,000 sold in the UK so parts are difficult to get hold of.
I was trying for a Terrano diesel, but my vehicle agent (My brother owns a garage in Gloucester) could not find a good one for a 'reasonable' price. It does have 'winter' tyres, and I agree it is more akin to the softroaders, freelander, honda etc. It is the 2.0ltr version and although the fuel consumption was not too bad on a run it does get a bit thirsty at more than 60mph and would expect that speeds over 70mph would really drink the fuel, but I don't know, the max speed is 103mph and I expect it would easily achieve this. so not too bad on the road. will have to see what it does next winter.

It is normally 2 wheel drive, when it detects the front wheels slipping it brings in 4 wheel drive. There is a switch on the dash for full time 4 wheel drive

Looks a tidy motor and being Mazda it should be good mechanically too. Once went green laning in Derbyshire and met an ex member from here called Cameraman He had the same motor as you. He barely made it up Bamford Hill the first lane and had to give up. So I doubt that you'll find much fun off road but I think as a nice every day family car and tow car it'll be great. Shortly after he bought a Patrol and was able to do more than keep up to the rest us on green lane trips.

Got to agree with Jim; these get a good writeup on Parkers and elsewhere....and Mazda generally are a bit of an unsung hero in the reliability stakes....

we had a mazda 626 f reg sold it in 2002 never went wrong put in petrol serviced regular new tyres trouble free motoring.

I have got the tyres muddy, but only across a rough field. Use it daily between Milton Keynes and Daventry, comfortable enough, no problems. Would not want to do it if my employers were not paying me 40p per mile - either that or I have a large hole in the fuel tank:naughty. would like to 'personalise' it a bit, wider wheels or lift the body? any ideas....:bow

Well, took the wheels off today to clean up the front arches. removed the plastic arch liners and found the mud went along, behind the plastic sill covers, managed to get a plant pot full out of one side. Undersealed it, oh and then discovered the discs were scored and the pads were knackered, so ended up replacing the discs and pads. Only half of the inside disc had been contacting the pads.

TYRES

Any one help me. TYRES, my Maverick currently sits on 225/70/15 tyres, although they look OK, when we took them off thye are starting to crack on the inner wall. So I need to replace all 4 tyres, I am looking at 4 General Grabber AT2s, but is it Ok to in crease the size from 225/70/15 to 225/75/15s. I am working on the 15 inch alloys because they are a bit cruddy. Thanks

thats only the dirt covers rusty. if they still work they are fine. performance shocks dont have covers on them
