Hi,
I have a problem with a 2.7tdi Maverick.
A Couple of days ago while driving there was a total loss of power and the fastest I could go was about 5-10mph.
There was no warning and no engine light.
After switching off and leaving for a while it cleared and I was able to head off only for it to hapen again 10 minutes later.
I have been told that it could be the throttle body which needs replacing but it will need to be 'diagnosed' by a ford dealership.
Normal smoke from the exaust if that helps.

I don't know if this is related but for a little while now it has fealt as if it had a sticky throttle but I put this down to dirty contacts on the pedal.
Until one day it fealt like cruse control and the engine light came on.
This was coupled with a loss of power followed by a surge if I touched the throttle.
I could clear the engine light but dipping the clutch and revving the engine, this would make it behave.
Still putting this down to dirty contact, I learnt how to drive it on higher revs and avoid the sticky point.

Couple of questions..
Could it be..
..The Turbo?
..Fuel filter?
..Throttle body?
I've been told that Ford 'tinkered' with the engine before releasing it so that a Nissan dealer can't help, is this true?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

if yo ugot a MAF unplug it, see if any change then start with fule filters, bont forget the mini filter

my gusss any ways

( i always say MAF first )

Re your last point, they all came out of the same factory in Spain; its only cosmetic differences between the Mav and Nissan - grille, badges etc..

You would be better off finding a good diesel specialist or a reliable Nissan specialist (the latter are a bit harder it has to be said!)...Ford are worse than useless.

When I had a new Maverick (on an S-plate I think) they even jacked up the service intervals putting majors in every 12k, when Nissan only did them at 18k.

Good luck with your problem; someone will be along soon!

Thanks for the replies.
Reference the 'Nissan/Ford' thing, I suspected that was the case and that the person who told me that just didn't know what they were on about.

I've seen a good post giving a detailed explaination on the mini filter and how to clean/remove it.
I'll give that a go.

Silly question.
Is it as stright forward as to 'unlug' the cable in the MAF or do I have to dismantle the air intake to remove it altogether?

Thanks

Hello mdb72,

It sounds like you have a problem with the throttle potentiometer; some members have removed and cleaned theirs with good results, although I believe it’s a little fiddly.

I would start by seeing if you have any engine fault codes stored in the ECU this may help point you in the right direction.

Hi,

Thank you all for your replies.
I think the throttle potentiometer is the cause of the initial problem I had.
The latest problem really does sound like dirty fuel clogging the mini filter.
I have managed to find a very nice mechanic who is prepared to try a couple of things to see if it works before getting an ECU diagnostics done.

I will pass on all your advise to him to try. He has already said that it does not sound too major becuase it's not giving out unusual smoke.

I'll let you know of the findings.

Thanks again

Mike

Hi All,
Sorry for the time gap, I've been away for a couple of weeks.
I though I would update all those who helped me.
This turned out to be the MAF.
Currently it is off the road as I am finding it difficult to track down a new one.
Anyone got any ideas where I can get a replacement?

Thanks

Is it Hitachi or Bosch? Should say on the unit somewhere...first is hard, second is fairly easy...

Hi lacroupade

Not too sure which it is.
I'm at work at the moment and the car's at home.
I'll check later which it is.

Got any supplers?

Thanks

Mike

I haven't but there are plenty on here who will point you at the right place easily.....:)

Turnes out that it's a Hitachi one.
Anyone got any ideas of supplier?

The Hitachi MAF is reputedly more reliable than the Bosch varient. This it would appear makes it more difficult to get yer mits on a second hand Hitach MAF. I have seen the odd one appear on fleabay....the Bosch unit is readily available on ebay.

Here's a Hitachi one ....But its in New Zealand....If your not in too much of a hurry :)

£49.50

Here too...in UK ...BUT...look at the price £170

Have you tried cleaning your MAF before shelling out lots of your hard earned cash for a replacement. Using Carb cleaner to clean up the two small wires may well be the solution.
