Can anyone advise me how the outer part of the handbrake cable disconnects from the rear of the hub. I need to replace this cable but there are no obvious bolts or clips and reluctant to use to much force.

Yes these can be barstuards to get out, almost impossible without damage to the cable, they use an expanding sprag system to lock into the back plate, you need to compress all three sprags at the same time, not worth the effort, just smack it out with a drift, Rick

I have only done it once, but on mine, the end of the outer cable had a sleeve that passes over the odd shaped bit which goes into the rear of the backplate.

Lots of WD40, and a set of tap pliers, rotating the sleeve back and forwards to work the oil in, and get it loose, and it then just slides off. If you are replacing it, you could use a bit of heat, but I did not need to, and was able to take it off, and free up the cable which was sticking, without having to replace the whole thing.

While I was obtaining some rear wheel studs the weekend, I took some close up pictures of the sprags that Rick was referring too, these are on the inside of the backplates
