I can do that in my Maverick now both up and down!!!!

it is good to practice as in the event of clutch operation failure it enables you to drive home as long as you are not in traffic, it is only the starting off that is hard but if you can read the road and keep moving it is quite possible to do many hundreds of miles with no pedal, I have, and in a 32 toner, after coming up from Lyon, even put it on the ferry, after walking on and informing the loaders of my problem, they just directed be down the middle up to the offload ramp, so straight of when docked, dropped the trailer in the compound and tractor only to Home base it was not about saving my boss money it was about me getting home for the weekend, great days, Rick

Just found this in the Workshop Manual for future reference;

1:1 ??

OK question time why is 4th always a ratio of 1:1, Rick

I suspect its as a result of development from 4 speed boxes. A larger gear would not fit through the main bearing web so they tinkered with the input shaft gear gear size.

Not looked at 6 speed design but suspect they might have 1:1 in 5th or 6 th as a result of built from scratch design ??

It is simply that 4th or top does not use any gears (which = inefficiency) it becomes just a straight through shaft, all the other bits in the box are doing nothing other than turning and that is important as the lay-shaft is often the only one in oil so this brings lube up to the rest, that is why almost no car should be towed for a long distance with the driving wheels on the ground as the only item turning in the box is the output shaft the la-shaft and the rest are stationary so no oil being stirred up = dry output shaft bearings if rotated for too long, Rick
