Hi All.

Since January 17 my 1997 Maverick SWB 2.7 TD has proved a reliable buy. Purchased for local shopping, dog beach trips and occasionally towing 5 x 10 Williams double wheel trailer. However I find that although it pulls the empty trailer without issue. It really has to work hard to pull a 1.5 ton pay load back, you can smell it getting hot and even temp guage rises as it climbs a quarter mile country lane incline in 2nd or 3rd. Am I expecting to much from it.

Mine are LWB but both tow gross over 4.5 tonnes with no problem, sure they will be slower uphill than solo, what is your solo fuel consumption like, does it push out black smoke, is it a TD or TDi if TDi Bosch or Zexel, are your turbo to manifold hoses tight and good, just for starters, Rick

Thanks for ideas.

Not aware of any black smoke. About 25 MPG on local runs. Will check hoses on turbo. Don't know how to tell whether its TDi or just TD.

If it's a TDI, it will have the Intercooler scoop on the bonnet, if it's a TD it will just have a bulge

Had a look under bonnet. Turbo mounts look O/K. Attach picture of engine and suggest this looks like a TDI model but no idea what injection system nor where to look. Talking to knowledable colleague (50 years in motor trade) about sluggish pulling loaded trailer. He knows the incline and said not surprised it struggled and got hot as many older vehicles do when towing hard even his old 1972 diesel range rover. That's its and old design engine with limited power. If I was really concerned about it getting hot change the rad it might help.

Feed back welcome

Exact same setup as mine, TDI.

Things to do/check, probably already mentioned in other posts: clean the MAF (if it is Hitachi), clean the intercooler, replace the rubber hoses connecting intercooler to engine, check turbo rubber hose, check fuel injection, remove fuel pump mini filter, get rid of EGR valve,...
Most of these are described in the workshop download section.

It will deffo be a Hitachi MAF as he hasn't got the big cylindrical Bosch fuel pump harness, he has the smaller square plug for the Zexel pump

Thanks for feedback I wiil look into those area in time. Meanwhile its still going which is the main thing.

Still going, it'll keep going forever.

They are good work horses but like all work horses need servicing. What's the condition of the air filter and fuel filter.

Have you tried it up the same hill solo without trailer?

Jim's right on the button, get the air filter and fuel filter swapped and see if you feel a difference.

My Zexel pumped Maverick went a bit sluggish at one point before I even started using it on veg, it turned out that the MAF was dirty, the beauty of the Hitachi MAF's is that they are serviceable, I'd grab yourself a can of Electrical Contact Cleaner from Maplins or similar and give it a clean, it did absolute wonders on mine!!!! I was that impressed I turned it into a Workshop download here that you now have access to for your tenner :naughty

Hi,

If checking all the filters is it worth having a look at the mini filter under the banjo bolt?

Apologies Perelaar just noticed you suggested this earlier
