Mav gave us bother for the first time on sunday It started no problem I popped to village and back ,half our later flat as a pancake . Cosmic and family were visiting and he kindly gave me a jump start .I would say it started with reluctance ,then no probs on many starts this week until cath went out this afternoon completly flat again and just won't turn the engine at all I swiched on everything and there was no reduction In the brightness and batery indicator at green when I try to start It Is just klicking like a machine gun ( does that make sense) hope someone can help many thanks

Hi neddy ! had similar problem with my 96 mistral, using it fine then wouldnt start one day.Again starter sounded as the battery was dieing so replaced it with brand new one, still not much change, hardly any power to turn engine over! Even now we have had a cold spell lately this was the first time had major probs.Took to local starter centre and had new starter and glow plugs fitted and now she starts and runs like a dream.1st turn of the key and a lot less smokey on start up!

I too am having similar problem. Have narrowed it down to ignition key unit and will buy new one About £30 plus vat. Sometimes a lousy earth on the starter motor will cause problems. If you stick a jump lead on the negative side of battery and hold other end on case of starter, turn it over and that will tell you if that is a cause.

Manty out of interest how did you narrow it down the ignition switch?

This is starting so show up more and more, 1st couple of years of this club no problems that I can remember and there seem to be a few in the last 6 months or so. Problem used to be main lead coming a drift at battery clamp or starter motor. Does anyone check how much current the starter motor is pulling?

I have had similar problems with my mav. first it cut out while driving . then would not start. then started but cut out . wiggled the key and starts ok. took steering cowl off and played around with wiring loom and key. usually starts with a wiggle of key then runs ok . will change ignition switch when i get time .Dont know what price as yet

hi

I would start with the simple things first and work along. check your electrical connections on all components. then i would look at ignition and starter, etc . these things are usually something simple . a garage just tend to replace parts that do not always need replacing.

Jocky, narrowed it down as follows. Checked battery first. ok. Then had alternator checked by a man who had the heavy duty meter. ok. Starter we checked for good earth, jump start cable from battery earth to case of starter motor..ok And it was recond Dec 2007 . I would never have thought of the ignition switch! A nissan replacement costs £30 plus vat. All thanks to all the info on these pages!!!!!!

Manty no problems:thumb2 I was getting confused when you said starter earth. I take it you mean the earth between the engine and chassis?

I once had a cavalier with a dodgy ignition switch. Started it one morning and it was arching that much I thought it was going to burst into flames:eek: plenty of smoke.
