Hi JT  You could go a step further but it wouldn't be really off road friendly & that would be to fit a pair of 12-24" long white neon/led tubes under the side steps & connect them up to the door switches  They could be wired so they all come on when a door is opened or (4 tubes needed for a 4 door) when each door is opened

altering front indicators to have 'dual filament' bulb holders.
then with side lights on will glow dim but flash bright with
indicator curcuit.
totally unnecessary but give you 'bumper level' marker lights
in same sort of style as disco series 2, guess could call it
north american spec.
guess must be legit as seen on coaches both to front and
side as marker/indicators. as local trams too atleast to sides.
following on this toyed with side marker lights on top of side
steps. to be rally clever then get brighter when door opens
to illuminate ground as you step out.

You wouldn't have to file out slots in the new hole in the brake light cluster.
Just a thought though, is 5W enough? I'm sure my tail lamps are 10W.
Lee.
