can anyone tell me if i can fit manual front hubs on my tdi 1998 as the auto ones dont seem to work...went out in the snow tonight and got stuck on top of beachy head..front wheels not spining on ice,mud or anything....rather fit manual ones...
milners ones they list as only fitting up to 1996? is this correct?

yes. you can milners fit im 99% sure.

ring and check Monday

Well they fit mine, mines an R Reg. Check out the downloads section and see the workshop on fitting them.

OR just fix your autos for a few quid or not a lot if you've got a scrappy near you:sly

Great help thanks.. just noticed it sais up to 2007 on the actual milners site so ill get some...

it will only be the spring thats gone soft or a bit too much grease or the grease has gone hard

If you have certain alloys, you may have difficulty geting to the actuator.
Make sure yours will be ok.

wish it did....it sais about reversing a metre to disengage them in the handbook and on the sunvisor...so i guess theyre auto...dont know what else it could be if they are permanent...

Hi bought a set last week from milners dead easy to fit theres even pic etc on the down load section

I thought the TDi had permanently engaged front hubs ?

Think it was around 2003 they started fitting fixed hub's.

It is usually the thing called Brake Ring that breaks, it has two parts and comes in a packet with the two matched rings. When I last bought the rings they were nearly £50 per side but that is some time ago. Replaced them twice and in the end just bought the manuals and not had a problem since. I simply lock mine when I'm likely to need 4wd and not been caught out with them unlocked since. There must be hundreds of posts about these hub's. I do agree that if they'll fix and stay fixed auto's must be better but mine went twice over heating on one occasion so just bit the bullet and got manual's.

I think there are two main causes of failure. Lack of use and When engaged they drive is snatched instead of setting off slowly. Neither of these were my problem.

Thought those rings might be the problem when I inspected mine recently. I cleaned all traces of grease off the surface where they bite together, and everything else just got a very light coat - they seem to work perfectly now.

Only problem that I found when I fitted them was that I left a toothed washer on the end of the drive shaft. Had to remove the manuals to take this toothed washer off but other than that mine went on easy, nearly forgot not as much grease as the download shows.

thanks guys...ill get the manuals from milner..lets hope it solves the problem....

It is so easy to check your hubs just lay under the front and turn the shaft to each wheel does not matter which way, if you can keep turning then the hub is not working, you will probably find one locks after about half a turn and the other does not, so strip this one and check it has been assembled correctly, or replace any broken bits, Rick

Forgot to say, if you are not sure just pop over to Bexhill thats where we are, Rick

Re furbed my auto hubs a few months ago new spring £3.75 from local factors re greased. All seems OK. Gave it a good try out at the last round of the British Off Road Championship in South Wales, and no problem also lots of 4x4 action with Rally GB.

thanks everyone..fitted new manual hubs from milners this morning..all is now perfect..
