A word of warning if you plan to install a set of manual freewheel hubs as supplied by Milners. Different design to the hubs demonstrated in the workshop link.

No instructions are included which was a bit of a problem as fitting requires the circlip to be relocated to the outer groove on the drive shaft, not something which is clear when you start to install. You have to remove and discard the auto drum and both washers.

Also no gaskets or seals are included. It's not clear what sort of gasket it should be anyway as the design doesn't seem to allow for any kind of sealing.
I used silicone on the mating surfaces and also under the head of the bolts.

The bolts pass into the inside of the hub so any dirt/crap/water which passes down the shaft of the bolts will find its way into the hub. I'll have to strip them from time to time and repack with grease.

Having said all that, they do work although the operation of the knobs is a little stiff at the moment. Likely they will free up with use.

Off this weekend for a day in the hills so they are due for a good testing but I think I will take some tools and the old hubs just in case.

Peter

PS I did take some pictures but they turned out rubbish, lens set to super macro :doh

I am far too lazy to consider manual hubs and when I need them the motor is going to be up to its ears in not nice stuff, nah thanks I will stick with auto's and a locked front diff, Rick

I know what you mean but I'm not a fan of "auto" anything and I don't like the delay in re-engaging if you have to back-up.
I'll just lock them if I think I might need 4wd and take the small penalty in fuel.
If all goes well at the weekend I may have a pair of only slightly used auto hubs for sale.
Peter

have not noticed any delay in locking after change of direction, but then have been on real sticky stuff, pics after the weekend hopefully, Rick

Never had any lag/delay or anything when changing direction :thumb2 I'd check the clutch :lol

Maybe it's just me then  but it seems to take about half a wheel rotation for the cam to disengage forward and engage reverse.
Not usually a problem or perhaps even noticed but as I said before I just don't like "auto" things.
At least I know for sure I've got drive at once in both directions.
Peter

Don't get too excited, that's only a maybe :D
