Have an issue with lumpy tick over.wife tells me its cut out 3 times turn off re start no problem.done it to me today no eml.but just been out turned ign on no eml or abs me thinks some f**ker had me over.

he may have removed the bulb!

anyway, id have alook at the good old CKP, not 100% sure where it is on yours, either at the front through the belts, or at the back somewhere in the bell housing i think. Id also be checking fuel filter, if its got one, turn the drain plug to ensure no water is in there.

MAF probably wont be causing stalling, but can contribute if its choked, so check that and the air filter too...

**sorry, just realised you are a 96 TDI so CKP should be through the belts at the front of the engine, small round black magnet with a wire running up and over the coolant/thermostat housing.

Just removed speedo to check bulbs. only to discover the arse pick that sold me the car filled the light tunnels to abs and eml lights with black silicon to prevent showing .this i find disgusting that someone is prepared to put my family at risk to secure a sale.so now need to find out why both lights stay on.

There are some rouge dealers out there and some private punters with no scruples. Not sure how long you have had it but you have recourse with a private punter all that buyer beware is history these days. I would follow the trail backwards if you paid good money for it. ABS is usually a relatively cheap fix in my experience. EML I have had no dealings with.

bloody hell mate, sorry to hear this, some people are just scum.

right, bets to assume then, that this car has issues. First thing I would do is get them bulbs sorted, and read the codes (I dont think on your 02 you can do it via the download section method, you may need a reader) but the codes will start you off in the right direction. Firstly, if its running lumpy and stalling, id be suspecting two things AFTER checking the fuel pipes,

1 - CKP

2 - No1 injector

both these are expensive, and may have pushed the seller to cover up the faults. what an absolute arse, are you going to chase him up, or has it been too long since buying it?

How long ago did you buy it...and private or dealer?

Hi
bought private jan 4th.i had an idea there may be an issue with the clutch (now sorted) as i bought the car with a full tank of diesel for £1500.once up and running its ok accelerates quite quick.just when it ticks over its lumpy. and if i boot it standing it drops down and cuts out.the past couple of days had the issue of stopping but turn off restarts.fitted new fuel filter today took for run so far eml off still lumpy low revs but abs back on.dont know if thats the broken wire in loom issue not sure of colour or location of common fault.

just put a length of clear pipe in the surply line just before pump only temp thro and see if there are any bubbles in the fuel might be filter housing letting in air any smoke when been idling after 1 min and touch throttle
