When I tried 4 low today on tarmac as I was just trying the 4 wheel drive stick out as it's the first 4 wheel drive I've had, it seemed to be skidding the rear wheel slightly when turning, is this normal ?
It sounded like a rear wheel but I'm not 100%

Yes fine

Probably the rear diff locking as you need to change your diff oil, get comma LSD oil

But it might just be the front wheels dragging/ unwinding as they do in 4wd due to no center diff

DO NOT DRIVE IN 4X4 ON TARMAC. :doh
There's no centre diff so you had transmission wind up and eventually a wheel managed to slip/skid out the tension.
R.T.F.M. it's on your sun visor right in front of your bontz :lol

So basically the oil needs changing and it will be fine ?
It's fine in 4 high and 2 high.
Is 4 low really meant for when it's on slippery stuff then ?

If it was sunny I might have seen that :lol :lol
I was only crawling in 1st gear just trying the stick out in different modes, I'll forget about 4 low unless I'm on mud :thumb2

Never use 4 high or low unless you are on slippery stuff, or you will get transmission wind up.
At best you will scrub your tyres, poor fuel consumption, at worst... Transmission damage, Gearbox, transfer box, prop shaft damage.

forget 4H aswell only use 4h or 4L when on slippery surface other wise u risk breaking something as u said earlier in another thread u wont be going off road so only use 4 wheel drive on the road when its snowing :thumbs

Yeah, use the 4wd when on gravel mud grass ets, to allow slippage, it damages the drive system if you use in in 4wd on tar. :thumb2

seems strange that some 4x4's are full time, they must have a different set up perhaps :nenau

Now that I'm aware that it is bad to do it on the terrano, I'll make sure I don't do it again, the last thing I want to do is damage anything on it :thumb2

Best of both worlds , two wheel drive on the black stuff = reasonable mpg over fixed all wheel drive trucks. AND you get LSD (back axle)
Then for off road 4x4 that's better than many :naughty

Ideal then :thumb2

Permanant 4WD 4X4's have a centre differential that allows the front axle to rotate at a different speed to the rear axle. Terrano's don't have this so when you use 4H or 4L you are locking the two axles together. This is better off road but much worse on road. 4WD only on the slippery stuff( instructions on the back of the sunvisor)

i never knew the front and rear axles would be locked in 4wd, makes sense :thumb2

Ok thankyou :thumb2

It baffles me :lol

if when in 4wd and front and rear wheel were not locked people would be saying its fine on road :doh and as you no terrano has no centre diff how was it working in 4wd:lol

So if I'm reading the instructions correct, it says to change from 2H to 4H while driving in a straight line, I would have thought it would be better to change ratio while stationary, would that be the same for 4L as well ?
Sorry but I still can't get my head around the correct procedure

4x4 High can be changed at reasonable speed. Four wheel high is not changing ratio.
4x4 LOW needs to be done stationary AND while box in neutral. Simples :D
If in doubt, flip down your sun visor, there be instruction thereon :augie
