Our first fault has developed on the Santa Fe it's a loud cheap sounding squeek from the engine bay !

It's less than half engine speed and loudest at tickover and lower revs so I am guessing its the idler wheel on the drive belt system somewhere. It had a new drive belt and tensioner in August 2013 some 13,000 miles ago.

Too cold and awkward for me to even contemplate tackling so my local mechanic man who lives round the corner is going to take a look at it on Friday for diagnosis and fixing.

Engine running, watching your hands carefully I sprayed the pulleys with silicone spray, and don't go mad. This was atleast 1 month ago, terrano is now whisper quiet. :thumb2

Silicone Spray cure

Might be worth a squirt to see if the noise stops- might just mask a worn idler pully noise for a while though.

My worry is that if I silence the squeek the next stage might be catastrophic failure of the belt tensioning system when the wife is in France.

Cheapest and cleanest test is to pour a cup of water slowly over the belt when it squeels at tick over, stand back though.

If the squeeling stops, then it is the belt in the pulley wheel.
It might be a loose belt, as maybe it has bedded in now, but never over tighten them, as it puts undue strain on the bearings and belt tensioner.

Has the load on the alternator increased, ie is there a drain on the battery between start ups, as the alternator pulley could slip too?

On my mav, I get a cha cha cha mechanical type noise now and again, water on the belt stops it.... sometimes for months.
Sometimes I put a quick squirt of WD 40 on the belt, I know it is frowned upon by some, but about 15 years ago I replaced the original belts, and these have been sprayed a few times, so can't really harm them.:nenau
I still have the original as spares... ohhhh they must be now 20 years old, I keep them as spares, just in case, in the jack locker...
For the Mav or Terrano, best replaced in pairs, as the water pump and the crank shaft pulleys are common for each belt. In fact on my Mav, they are the same part No.

That noise !!

Thanks for the input guys/galls.
Motor is being collected in the morning and my local mechanic is going to take the tension off and test for any roughness on either of the two idler type wheels - one is fixed the other is on the tensioner.

I have been using him since 1985 so I have a lot of trust and faith in him. His Missus has a Maverick petrol!

Sadly like me he is not getting any younger so when he does hang his overalls up I will be in the lap of the gods unless I decide to skin my knuckles and do stuff myself again. These days I don't fancy heavy suspension work or doing stuff like timing belts.

Belt squeek

It is the drive belt, spray on belt lubricant and all is quiet for a few minutes then it gradually creeps back to noisy.

New belt ordered ans should be fitted this Tuesday !

That Squeek - not the belt !!

Well new drive belt was due to be put on today and guess what ?

When checking everything before putting on the belt found idler wheel was loose! The idler pully retaining bolt had come loose and was close to dropping off. So much for the main dealer who replaced my cambelt and drive belt when we first bought the Hyundai.

New pully wheel to be fitted in the morning - mechanic says old belt is fine not in need of replacement !
