Hi folks - just spoken to Evans-Halshaw Nissan dealer in Leeds and they are saying the chassis number I have is too short. It is 12 characters and it should be 17. Without the full number they cannot access the Nissan computer system. Can anybody help please?
As well as under the bonnet there is a chassis number on the sill on off side, ( maybe nearside on export models ! approx level with the cross member holding the torsion bar adjusters. Or it could be on the chassis either side, in that area. Check with Nissan!

Nissan should have told you this !

Hi Rustic - I have had a good look round underneath the vehicle (not easy with it in the middle of the road and pointing downhill!) and I can see no sign of a plate on either the chassis itself or the sills. I'll try again.

Hi Rustic - I can't say I'm really mechanically minded but I have followed the chassis from front to back both near and off sides and looked again at the sills and can see nothing.

I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that I will have to either force a door lock or smash a window unless some kind soul finds and hands in my key to the police.

Hi Alan
The chassis number should be on your log book and mot certificate
What part of the country are you from as i have a mate who is a auto lock smith.

Hi - I'm in Pudsey (between Leeds & Bradford). The chassis number I have is 12 characters. When I speak to Nissan UK about ordering a replacement key, they say I need a 17 character chassis number. If your mate could get my car open and make me a new key you'd be a friend for life - although I realise that Leeds is quite a way from Nottingham.

They do know it's an import don't they?

OK, have a look through the grill to see if there is any way of reaching the bonnet release cable or catch.

Hi Alan I just looked at mine, 1995 Maverick LWB.
I have found my full 17 digit chassis number, difficult to see you need a torch, lighting it from the side. I've never noticed it before, (in 14 years).
You can't see it without the torch at an angle.

It is on the chassis on the offside approx 40mm from bottom edge, it starts exactly where the torsion bar cross member meets the chassis, and goes forwards, (half way along the drivers (offside) door, follow down to the chassis, and it is facing outwards. The digits are approx 8mm high, and run for 150mm. In fact thinking on, mine originally had some tape or a label covering the same spot, now I know why.

I found holding the torch from the front direction along the chassis works best, you may need to wipe the chassis with some solvent.
If someone holds a blanket over you and the vehicle may help the torch.

Just this minute looked at mine, but mine is garaged so quite dark.
If you are stuck, PM me your email address and I will photograph the area if it helps.
Best regards, Rustic

HI there, if it is a true imported Mistral from Japan it will not have a long vin number on it, unless it is a local umber put on when registered.
On mine I can't find the outside vin number yet could be under the rubber skirt behind the front wheels.

I have looked my keys inside but was luckier enough to have a spare set.
I locked the it up as normal then went to the back opened it with the keys, and put the keys down inside. When finished mucking around pushed the knob down and shut it

Anyway you have 2 possible ways of getting in:

1. Take a coat hanger straightened it out with a slight bend at the end. This end needs to go in first.
To save your paint work from scratches take some insulation tape and wrap it around the length of wire.
On the drivers side where the door frame is in lines with the bottom of the window (by the wing mirror) you can insert the wire through the gaps to try and push the locking lever by the door handle. You'll need another person on the other side to guide you and a lot of patience once in.

2. or get yourself a long steel ruler and insert between the glass and the outside window rubber and try and catch the locking mechanism inside the door by swinging it side ways. You might need to bend the ruler to get leverage.

another one I have heard of is to cause a volt surge but you need to get to the battery first but not really recommended. The volt jolts the lock to unlock, this works on some jap imports but don't know about the Mistral.

Good luck

Hi all,

I tried a number of different ways to find the chassis number but have been unsuccessful. I had to get a locksmith out to sort out the locks and a car electrician to immobilise the immobilisor.

Car now back up and running and I had a look at the plate in the engine bay - the number there is only 12 digits and after having another good look along the chassis on both sides I still can find nothing there either.

So, as a result of losing my key I have had to spend some £200. What a wally.

I would like to say thanks to you all though, the advice has been helpful and it's always re-assuring to know that there are people out there ready to hel and offer advice. It has been much appreciated.

I'm glad you've managed to get in shame about the cost thow 8O put your new kew on a bit a elastic & tie the other end around your bits  well can't see you loosing them in the street

At least you tried every avenue before spending hard earnt cash, but you are back on the road and that is important.
No damage to vehicle either, so not too bad a bill in the end I guess.
regards, Rustic
