hi folks - I have managed to lose the only set of keys I have for my Terrano / Mistral Japanese import. The doors are locked and I do not know what to do - The AA dumped it outside my house but I cannot get in or move it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi, Alan welcome to the club, can you give some details on the age of the vehicle, model etc,
Does it have remote central locking etc?
Does it have an immobiliser or alarm?
Did the AA attempt to open the vehicle?
Where do you live?
Is there the slightest chance that the keys are somewhere in the vehicle?
Do you have the chassis number on the V5 document, if so you may be able to get the key number from Nissan ?

best regards,
Rustic

Our man at Nissan may be able to help if you can get a new set with some vehicle details!.

Thanks for the reply and the welcome.

It's a 1993 'K' reg Nissan Terrano - R3M (i'm told it's a Mistral) It does have central locking but not remote and a previous owner fitted an after-market Clifford Alarm/Immobilisor. The AA didn't try to open it they didn't seem to be able to find a locksmith in my area (Pudsey near Leeds in West Yorks) so they just brought it home. The doors can only be opened by actually using the key in the lock so it cannot be inside. According to the V5 the chassis number is: LBYD210*****. Do you think Nissan will provide a replacement key for a vehicle so old and an import?

Any help or advice you (or anyone) can give would be most welcome.

Nissan some where will have the key details, you could try your local dealer, some may charge for this service !
Some dealers just cut a key from the chassis details.

I suggest that you go to edit in the forum and delete your chassis number from your previous reply! JUST IN CASE !
You can always PM it to whoever needs it.

We have a member on file who offers Nissan discounts, so he may be able to help you.

I assume that the original key fitted all locks including the rear door, so it most probably the original key number. Which is a good thing.
Also from your information, the key won't have a chip inside.

I guess more members will be along shortly, not many members are on line yet.
Best regards,
Rustic

Have edited the Chassis number.

Mav.

Thanks for the info and for editing the Chassis no. Mav.

The help is appreciated.

I've just spoken to the two local Nissan dealers who say their service teams may be able to help but they are not available until Monday. Neither seemed bothered that the car was an import so that at least is some good news.

Whether the service teams agree with that though I will have to wait and see.

Anyway, thank you for your help so far Rustic & Mav it is appreciated and hopefully others may be able to give som eadvice too.

i've got a realy big brick that you can use  only joking, i'm sure that nissan will help you out.

If you get no further I can tell you how to break into your car but you will need a new door lock & may have to straighten the door slightly around the lock

Hi, If I can avoid damaging the vehicle obviously I would prefer it. However, if needs must then I will have to consider 'other' methods of getting in.

It is very frustrating!

Just a quick thought but have you tried your local shops, police station etc to see if aanyone has found and handed in your keys?

I have tried walking past as many local shops as I can and have posted a missing report with the police with no luck so far.

Hopefully they will be handed in and sooner rather than later would be nice. Still, these things happen.

A friend of mine had a fool proof way of getting into the car, when he locked the keys in, check with your local auto windscreen company first to find which piece of glass he can get quickly.... then broke that window.
Ok if they are quarter lights, but a problem with our trucks.
Not sure if the insurance company would pay out though !

In hindsight..... always have a spare key
At some time the key will wear, and you can try the other one to see if it is the lock.
Or if going on a long journey, get a passenger to carry a spare, just in case.
We always take 2 when going to France or on Holiday.

I trust everything will be sorted on Monday.
I bet you're glad you joined our club.
best regards, Rustic

How about a length of fibre glass srap that goes around boxes. Fold it in half with a neat crease, poke it through the door seal and steer it by pushing each half in turn. If your lucky you might be able to wrap it around the door handle and pull or perhaps the button on the inside of the tailgate.

I guess if he manages to open it today, he will have to lock it again overnight, ok if the keys are really inside though, maybe in a jacket pocket, but as Alan said, he used them to lock the car.
I like the idea of the "banding strip" must remember to save some from the next parcel. Better than a coat hanger though.
I might try it to see if it works.
My daughter locked her keys in the boot of her Fiesta, the AA managed to get a wire down the door, it took 5 seconds.
When she came home, I had to bend the door back straight though !!!!! they had forced the door at the top a little.
Small price to pay I guess.

When I bought the car there was only one key with it. A previous owner had fitted a Clifford Alarm/Immobilisor and there was a black plastice blob that was on the key-ring that the car had to detect before the electronics would turn on. I had thought about getting a spare key cut before but without the alarm blob the key would have been useless, that's why I had not done so.

I think my next steps are to find out from a Nissan dealer in Leeds (Evans-Halshaw seem to be the closest) how much new keys will cost and then find someone to remove / bypass the alarm/immobilisor.

If anyone has any other ideas about who else to contact again I would be grateful.

If you can get inside the vehicle at all you may find a white sticker inside the glove box with the key number on it. The older Nissans used to have this sticker and I would not be suprised if yours does.

If you contact Clifford they should be able to replace the blach blob you call it but I don't know what the price will be. To remove the alarm you'll prob have to get an auto elect who has dealt with Clifford alarms to remove it as IIRC all the wires are black

Hi folks - just spoken to Evans-Halshaw Nissan dealer in Leeds and they are saying the chassis number I have is too short. It is 12 characters and it should be 17. Without the full number they cannot access the Nissan computer system. Can anybody help please?
