I think the key has to match the ignition reader thing in or by the lock to allow the engine to start

i THINK the key numner is on the barrel.

so can order a key cut.

coded bit is fitted in the black handle bit, fix that bit inside stearing cover.

so just have key blades on keyring

If it's a 1995 square headlight model it's the same as mine and doesn't have a transponder/chip.

If you are left without a key then I'd be tempted to go see a dealer with your reg docs and proof of id. If it's not chipped it isn't going to cost a lot even from a dealer. The dealer doesn't keep a record of key number but Nissan do and the dealer will have access to it.

Mine does tho, Timpsons do keys for terrano they're £40, priced one up the other week...but I had the key could take barrels & docs to them & see if they can do anything??

I have two square head light motors one has a chip the other does not if you can get into the car then look for a plastic ring with a wire connection around the ignition switch if it has this then present all your details to them and they can get you a key, But you will have to get the car to them in order to program the key to your immu, or they might come out at a charge, if no ring coil then just get them to cut you a key from your vehicle details, Rick

I've got my local auto locksmiths onto it... He's taken the details and is gonna get back to me.... I will keep you posted. Lesson learnt make sure you always have a spare key!!
