Bowling back from a pleasant week in the Limousin in the Patrol all was going well 'till I reached Chatres. Sudden loss of power, some smoke - then the engine cut out. Managed to restart but it fizzled out in a few minutes.

Fortunately I've got some cover for this eventuality thru my household insurance. (clever Mrs Sedger). I was eventually flat bed trucked to the Nissan dealer in Chatres.

Much gallic shoulder shrugging ensued and pointed references to the non Nissan fual filter - this was changed with no effect. Readings were taken via laptop and Cam belts were examined and declared ok. The final judgement was that the injector pump was done for. The bill for replacement would be 3,000 euros. This in addition to the 200 euro for the filter (not needed) and the investigation.

I had to stay in a nearby hotel that smelled strongly of wee - but that's another story.......

I'm having the vehicle repatriated (on the insurance) (there's a lot of wine in the back:lol) - and will get it checked out by the guy who usually does the big jobs on it (no not those kind).

What do you guys feel about the diagnosis? And what should the repair cost if the diagnosis is accurate? If it is in the order of £2,000 - £3,000 then it just won't be economic ro repair.:(

the worst thing is - this gives Mrs Sedger all the ammunition she needs to "get rid of that old truck" etc etc.

theres engines on ebay fitted for round £1200. unfortunatly i think there manchester way and you cant be sure what your buying but if you can find something similar close to home you might get to keep the bus..

good luck

When do you expect the vehicle back in the UK?

If it is the injector pump it might be wortwhile ringing around for a second hand one. It doesn't seem to be the biggest job in the world to replace it but I gather the price of a new pump from the dealer will be very expensive.

If you need any help then let me know. Would be a shame to see another Patrol bite the dust.

thanks for the support...

..... will hear tomorrow the eta for the truck. I'll look at it, think about it and then do something. That is my plan. Not cunning at all. but it's a plan.

You see. It wanted to stay in France where mine is. Good luck with it mate. Interested to see the diagnosis.

hi

just google it then, type in diesel bob, he is a proper bloke with a good reputation. Loads of useful stuff on his site

Can't get on his site - tried several ways - without the AVG warning.

Update on repatriation of the car - back on 23rd. Question is - will the cases of wine, my tools and the dirty washing still be in the back?

Strange, tried it a second time and now Norton says the site is safe.

Update - good news/bad news

Plank - thanx for taking the trouble to post Bob's contact details.

Truck back in UK. Local guy (Eddie) says French main dealer mechanics don't know their derriere from their coude. Took him less than an hour to pin down that the fuel line from tank is holed, air getting in. Rigged up temp alternative fuel supply (jerry can) and runs just fine. That's the good news.

But, as was so well shown in Flying Torquewrench's project, once there's rot there's a lot of it. So putting new line in will be difficult. Tank need to come out and can't even see the tank fixings.

Further investigation proceeds - but Eddie is keen to keep the truck on the road - so I'm hopeful.

I'll keep you posted....

Generally the fuel line leak tends to be round the rear drivers side wheel arch area.when mine went there i just cut the pipe at the front of the arch and replace the short rubber line with a lonnger one only needed a meter of 8 mm fuel line and less than an hour.
Tjere is no need to remove tank an access plate below the carpet allows you to get to the fuel lines and replace as neede.
