How does the engine start from cold / hot? Straight away or need lots of cranking? Mine will start from cold in this weather with NO glowing at all as a guide (alittle burst of white smoke initially but then totally clean and smooth).

Does it sound entirely healthy other than no power?

Blocked exhaust is one thing you should check also, drop the downpipe off the turbo to check. A blocked exhaust WILL cause the engine to run hot when you push it.

If it was tricky to start and was smoking, then i would also say cam / inj pump timing is out, but you dont mention this.

Are you certain that you have a good non-aerated fuel supply at the inj pump. Hook up some temporary clear tube between filter and inj pump to be certain.

Also have you got a full 4-4.5v output from the pedal sensor when its right down??? If the ecu is only seeing 2-3v then its never going to instruct the pump for full power.

I have a feeling this is a simple issue.

the car starts first time everytime in hot or cold or freezing with no waiting for glow light or need of throttle..no smoke at anytime at start up,accelerating or any speed...car is smooth and quiet at idle or at 80mph etc..no oil leaks at all...
a pipe has been rigged up from a can of diesel into the inj pump to make sure none of the pipes etc were sucking in air....inj pump has just been reconditioned...inj pump timing has been tested in different positions with no improvement to the problem.a new centre and tailpipe has just been fitted and the presure from the exhaust apparently is excellent...
there does not seem to be much resistance when turning the engine over using a spanner on the crank pulley....

HI..

would the compressions being down(if they are)cause lack of power over 2000rpm? it picks up again after 3000rpm a bit..
....

Yes could do, depends on why the compressions are down rings/bores or valves, well worth getting the compressions tested, considering what you have done already, timbos suggestion of throttle pedal out put, is more important to check, Rick

If the compressions were down (say equally- very unlikely) then it would struggle to start from cold without alot of glowing and white smoke. I dont think compressions are your problem.

Couple more things to check:

It would seem to me that something is preventing it getting full fuelling. Are you certain the ecu is seeing a good load signal from the maf?? You want a good 4v at about 2500rpm upwards.

Has the wastegate actuator rod fallen off, or the poppet valve inside the housing melted/ fell off, or something is jamming it open. Get a boost gauge on it - you should see 10-12psi at full load, 2500rpm, which will fall back to under 10psi as you approach 4000rpm. I've also seen actuator rods unwind themselves when the locknut has come loose. Check the yellow paint is un-disturbed.

Sorry for the random musings, but it's been a long day!!!

thanks for that..

we have found the rod moved and the nut loose.....let you know what happens..

HI..
it dosent make any difference adjusting the rod at this stage..

does anybody know the part number for an hitachi maf sensor on a late 97 2.7tdi maverick?

i have the numbers 226802j200 and afh7014 on the existing unit but im not sure if it has the correct one fitted.

thanks
