Well my time in Iceland is nearly done and I am on my way back to the UK and so the T2 has to go :(. It has been a good bus out here but a bit of a money pit as I had nowhere to work DIY.

So I am looking at my options for the UK. I had considered getting a 4k T2 and having a grand spare for repairs but I don't really need anything as "full on" as a T2 and better mpg would be a big advantage.
I am very keen however on keeping AWD for grotty weather and poor roads. I have about 5k to play with. Soooo I have narrowed my options to:-

X-Trail
Subaru Forrester

"possibly"
Subaru legacy
Passat 4motion

So what can I expect for 5k in an X-Trail ? I have looked on auto trader but I am interested in peoples experience.
Anyone got any opinions on the other options ?

I'm sorry I just can't see past getting an '04 3.0 sve Terrano.

Also can't understand you thinking they are a money pit ...

Hate foresters as boxer engines are all good but last about 80k lol

Passats are great never go wrong but are totally BORING !

Xtrails for me are a pointless soft roader

Just my 2 cents

I take it your not looking at actual heavy off road maybe cross A field once in A while in uk ? Have an xtrail di older nissan engine which doesnt give too much bother does 35 to 40 mpg you may get A cheap 2003 on ebay but otherwise your looking approx 4k as far as being pointless goes if you live in A hilly country area in uk then A 4X4 'softroader' that will do 40mpg and actually handle snow (unlike x3/x5/audi ) + when you put seats down has bags of space then cant grumble:thumb2

as an afterthought if your looking at an initial cheap but much more off road something have A look at lpg'd grand cherokees on flea bay get good return eg 19 to gallon on lpg = approx 30 to gallon on petrol & loads of comfort :D

My neighbor is selling off his xtrail after all of 6 months ownership. Perfectly fine AWD thingy as said, big enough inside but acres of plastic  Lack luster performance but good mpg , just a bit dull.
I nearly bought a Legacy twin turbo a month ago, awesome bit of kit and 240 bhp to play with :clap shame about the stupid insurance companies spoiling my fun though 'cause it was an "import", ruddy twats :doh
Good luck not well up on other awd but please dont get a gaylander :lol

Thanks for the replies guys.

@ Stinka - I had considered the 3.0 T2 but the fuel consumption is just too high for a daily user - I need around 40 to the gallon - and considering I don't plan on doing any major off-roading then it is overkill. I had the T2 here because many roads are no more than potholed washed out tracks. As I said the T@ has cost me a lot because I couldn't work on it myself - a head rebuild for example

@iain.s - thanks - that is exactly the situation - I will be back in the NW and need something where I can go places on hills and snow. A soft-raoder will suit me fine. You mention "older engine" - how many types are there ?

@Makeitfit - I deffo will not be getting anything with a Landrover badge on it.

I just noticed on the photos the instrument binnacle of the X-Trail is in the MIDDLE ??!! WTF ?? I don't like that :( - Oh dear....

PS - @ Makeitfit - I did ask the guy over here about the flared arches for the T2 - he can make them but it would be September and he wants ..... 100,000 ISK = £500   They are nice but holy f.....

Here is a pic as to what they would look like.

The later Xtrails have the dashboard in the correct place;) but will be out of your price range I think

You get used to it but then I used to have A load of old centre clocked minis so that probably helped , the older engine is the nissan yd22 di 2.2 litre not as powerful as the post 03 dci renault engine but more robust

I am considering taking the xtrail plunge too! it seems to make more sense to me at the moment to have a more economical 'car' and a transit van than my current T2 commercial and trailer combination.

what is the towing capacity of a 2.2 diesel older style Xtrail?

According to the Autotraders site, a rather respectable 2000kg's. This might be something I would consider in due course.
