Blimey, what a long day, yesterday evening after work, we went to the gun club after I rode home, whilst I was there I noticed my eye was itchy :nenau

Rubbing it was probably the worst thing, after we got home it continued to itch, I could not see anything trapped in the lids ect until I tried to sleep, not a chance, very painful with eyes shut, it was then I saw a mark in my iris :doh

So I tried to wash it out using a special wash station kit, and I tied a cotton swab, no good...

Off to ealing hospital, got there for 2am... After a long wait the nurse tried to have a go but could not remove the object. She then referred me to the eye specialist at Baker Street. Once there we had a very long wait again, the docs digs right in an starts getting his sharps out (I went as white as a ghost apparently)

Once he put anaesthetic in my eye he told me to Focus on a certain point. About 10 mins later (or 5 years of tourtière in my time) :lol the object was out.

It seemed to be a piece of metal from somewhere, either motorway or gun club.

I now have a very sore eye and antibiotic cream for a week. The doc was good.

I've been up for nearly 26 hours... I need sleep!!!

Oh no sorry to hear that pal, hope it gets better soon. Careful driving until youve recovered.

You cannot afford to mess about with your eyes.......sleep is the best healer....alongside the anti b`s

I trust you wear glasses/goggles when your shooting Alex.
Some years ago I scratched my eye and had a dye put in so they could detect the damage, I was not allowed to drive for a whole day after.

Back along in work, was welding and grinding back. Had goggles on under welding mask, to make things move on a bit.......still got something in the eye that required a visit to the Eye Infirmary......very painful and no driving for quite a few days.....:(

Ouch had metal in my eyes before & petrol not nice at all, get your head down & rest up

Cheers chappies, ive had some kip now and the eye is still very tender but more bearable now :thumb2

Actually it's quite funny, the club don't enforce the use of eye protection but insist its good practise, as it happens we cant b sure it came from the club but that's when I noticed my eye itching, I think the problem being that I pushed it so deep into my eye whilst trying to remove it... :doh

I will be getting myself some goggles I think as I was using iron sight too.

bad luck Alex, but at least you got it out, Rick

Cheers rick, yes true, actually he said there will be small fragments left in my eye for a few days, the antibiotics will help get that out but yes, can't see anything now so must be small :D

Really have to be careful with eyes mate, I got caustic soda in mine a few years ago. A very quick lesson in complacency and wearing goggles.

mmmm goggles are not necessarily a good defence, Alex you can testify as to my way of working, over the years you develop ways to protect yourself from harm, I have never worn eye protection and do more than many on here grinding/cutting etc, what I will say is if you are not like me then you must take every precaution available or you will like Alex fall fail of a problem, Rick

Yes as it happens, I have ordered two pairs of shooting glasses, one for me and one for the missus, only 5 quid each

In my defense not a lot I could have done, didn't even realise something had gone in my eye.. Very strange, just noticed and itching and irritation, then later when I could not sleep I discovered it :doh

I feel I need to state this point, when I was around 10 years old I went fishing with some mates, now as I lived in Chiswick we had to go to Ruislip to get to fishing water this meant a train ride, trains of the day were steam, on the way out I stuck my head out the window and must have got hot ash speck in my eye, but did not notice other than a mild eye irritation at the time, a few days later my eye got bad and I was taken to Moorfields, where the guy extracted the offending grit, and was told that as the eye renews its surface all the time that this grit would have gradually made its way to the interior, and once there I would have been blind in that eye, I cannot confirm that, but that was what I and my parents were told at the time as far as memory goes, but since then I have adopted a protective strategy that does not involve mechanical devices, as they are often not available when you need them, and goggles/masks steam up so you cannot see what you are doing, some will say I am a fool, but after 67 years I am still here and still doing what I do, and with no ill effects whatsoever, why? because I can handle tools no matter what, that is just the way it is, now I have employed guys that are just accidents waiting to happen, hope you see where I am coming from, I am not in any way suggesting that any one copies what I do, Rick

When I use any grinder, I wear goggles...always, when welding, I use the correct face shield....always

Even using a hedge trimmer as they chuck bits of hedge back at your face, so I will have glasses on too.

I need my eyes and of all the disabilities that you can have, I would hate to be blind :thumb2

40 years working in the forest, workshop and gardens........I second the above.....:thumb2

Don't think I've ever seen any one wear safety glasses when shooting a rifle. Pistols. maybe. David.
