Hi all,

I was driving slowly around a carpark ( it had been raining ) looking for a space when I was aware by the feel of the brake pedal that the back off side wheel was snatching and sure enough when I applied a little more to the pedal it locked up on its own.

This does not happen in the dry. I replaced the shoes 6 months ago and slightly bevelled the leading edges of the shoes to prevent this sort of thing happening.

Is there a restricter valve here which may have gone faulty?

Cheers

Rich

Could be a seized bias valve but not all terrano's had them fitted.
If it's got one it's located on the drivers side of the chassis just in front of the rear coil spring.

more likely the beginnings of a wheel cylinder leak, small traces of BF cause grab until more fluid leaks then they just slip, Rick

In the wet when turning, the rear limited slip diff can appear to snatch as it fights the other rear wheel when turning.

Do you know when the LSD oil was changed?
It is a special oil too.

Brake shoe friction material come away from the shoe and jamming in bottom part of drum? :nenau

With my recent experience when my rear wheel locked because the shoe fell apart, it didn't unlock until I reversed a little. That'll be the first place I looked though. Whip off them wheels and hubs and check them out.

I guess best course of action is to remove both drums and inspect. Then replace lsd oil :thumbs

My thoughts are brake fluid on the linings.
Yes could be diff lock but that's a very mechanical feel whereas brake shoes with fluid on are a straight wheel lock and slide.

I've just had the drums off again and dry as a bone, absolutely no sign of any leakage. :nenau

Looks like this diff noise in reverse is still the issue and I will have to change the oil.

What oil is it? - I'll get some tomorrow.

Many thanks

Rich

best bet is Comma LSD oil many local motor factors stock it or can get it next day, but make sure it says LIMITED SLIP on the pack, Rick

If non LSD oil has been used in the last oil change in the rear diff, then it is advised that you should do another change, with LSD oil of course, after a few hundred miles or so.:thumb2
